Saving as .svg problems opening in fusion 360

Postby RussMaGuss » Wed Apr 26, 2017 10:14 am

I'm trying to take an image and save it as .svg to insert into fusion 360. I open inkscape, select "import", select the image, it pops up and save as a .svg

The problem occurs opening it in fusion 360. I get an error message saying "The selected SVG file contains no information or some unsupported information. The Fusion sketch will not include unsupported geometry."

I've tried so many variants over the past couple hours, even uninstalling and reinstalling inkscape to no avail.

I may or may not have changed a setting though? (when i uninstalled, i selected don't keep previous settings) i had a previous issue where all my attempts at saving .svg's had the internet explorer icon and apparently were html files. I read on another post someone had success by going to program files>inkscape>share>templates and right clicking and making the default program to open svgs as inkscape. So I did that, but it still didn't work. After uninstalling (making sure i didn't keep the previous settings) and reinstalling, the files under "templates" had the inkscape Icon instead of the internet explorer icon.

i just made the switch from mac to windows (haven't used windows since vista came out) so I may just be overlooking something very simple. Thank you so much for any information you guys can provide me with!!!

A couple of thoughts...

Is the image you are importing into Inkscape a bitmap? If so, it will need to be traced to make vectors and the bitmap object removed from the svg.

Are all the objects in Inkscape vector paths? Fusion 360 might not recognize some svg objects that are not paths. (I have not tested this much.)

Do you have an example svg file you can attach (or link-to)? We can examine the file and maybe test in Fusion 360.

Have a nice day.

I'm using Inkscape 0.92.2 (5c3e80d, 2017-08-06), 64 bit win8.1

The image is a simple silhouette of a black cat (2.88 kb) i'm still relatively new to fusion as well so I can't answer that question very well, but I have imported many .dxf's and .svg's on my mac when I was primarily using that for fusion

I'm not clear if you still have a problem with SVG files having IE icons, or if that has been fixed. If they now have Inkscape icons, then that problem has been fixed, and probably isn't contributing to the problem with Fusion 360.

Not sure if my initial response is still pending or not, but i'll give it another shot in case it didn't properly submit.

It's a simple cat silhouette .jpg I pulled from google (first or second image when you google "cat silhouette. Sorry for no attachment, I'm brand new to this forum and am unsure of how to do it properly here)

@brynn: The icons show the inkscape icon, and any saved files are shown that way as well. Hopefully at least that issue is resolved!

Inkscape can import and use bitmap images. Fusion 360 svg import expects only vector objects, so the image needs to be traced.

This is fast and dirty, but shows the general workflow.

Or visit openclipart.org, to get an SVG file with vectors right away: https://openclipart.org/search/?query=cat+silhouette

(They're kind of like a sister project to Inkscape, publishing only public domain /CC0 dedication images)

Thank you! That helped a ton!

One more question: I tried doing this to a chicago cubs logo, but it was missing a few lines when I imported it to fusion 360 so I could not extrude it unless I retraced everything. Also, seemingly closed lines were not--After insert, I was not able to highlight them to extrude. Any ideas? I found http://online.rapidresizer.com/photogra ... d7d0192f96 on another post here that traces everything out to be one line, but the same thing happens when I bitmap trace, so I think I'm going in circles here now.... lol

Like noted in the above comments, a search for svg or vector versions of your subject matter can make life simpler/easier/faster.

Also sometimes it's a simple matter to re-create artwork. (Then you likely know what will be closed paths).
