Multiple Pages Support

Postby alextretij » Tue Jan 08, 2008 7:22 pm

Can you add a Multiple Pages Support in 0.47?
It's very impotent for us.

I know you plan this feature in 0.49-0.50. I waited this feature 2 years :).
I think it's analog for layers. layers=pages (for programing, new menu, copy code from layers)

The new version 0.46 is very GOOD!!!

Sorry for my Bad English.

I'd be happy with tabs instead of separate inkscape instances for each open document.

I'd like to say that pages would be a big benefit. A CorelDRAW user friend of mine was interested in Inkscape, but his first questions was: "Does it support Pages?"

So pages would be really, really cool.

Does CorelDraw support pages? I assumed it wouldn't since Illustrator doesn't.

Yes. CorelDRAW supports pages and has done so for a number of years.

one available option: would be more interesting if the multipaging of Inkscape would be more like (Aldus/Macromedia) Freehand, like having a large table, where you can place the pages where you want - it appeared on Freehand 4, from early 90's (around 1993 or 1994)

another available option: the pages could be also used as animation frames when using it to make animations (animated .svg, .svg sequence, swfc or .swf) instead of making a .pdf-like file or printing document - where we could have onionskin features and alike...

No it doesn't. Not without a plugin as suggested above. In it's templates it even maintains seperate files for seperate pages (i.e. Brochure Inside.ai, Brochure outsite.ai).

It's why I've say it's not a function, but a way to create the document.
For exemple, for 2 A4, create a A3 and in the print menu, use "tile full page".
Just a trick, not a REALLLLL multi page, but multipage anyway.

I see. So you don't need Inkscape to handle multiple pages, rather it needs to be able to print a single document across multiple pages (i.e. An A3 across two A4's)? Has anyone tried this already?

Ok, there's a quick explanation here. I'm looking for a inkscape way to do it.

Although this is not an efficient way, I exported a page as a png by using the custom size select in the export dialogue box. This could be extremely tedious for someone wanting to do several pages, but maybe useful for simple projects. Unfortunately, it can only be exported as png and not the preferred pdf.

Just wanted to add my support for having multiple pages in Inkscape, specifically for producing multi-page PDFs. I'm currently producing material for a book which I aim to publish online towards the middle of 2009. I'm doing everything in Inkscape because there simply isn't any other open source package that comes anywhere close. I really appreciate the efforts being made by the development community on this software package - keep up the good work!

I use PosteRazor to do this. Export your Inkscape picture as a PNG, and PosteRazor slices it up into a PDF, with or without borders and overlaps.

its all been said:
I would be very surprised if this was not fairly high on someones priority list.....
because people expect things like this as a given....
and apps that don't have what most people most expect are left in the dust....
I think its just a matter of time....

inkscape is illustration software. not page layout software. i don't mind not having multipage support in the least. when i'm ready to layout pages i use scribus.

I'm sure I mentioned this before in another thread, that the current SVG standard doesn't support multiple pages. Anything Inkscape does today to create multiple pages will not present properly in any other application that support SVG. But the next version of SVG will support multiple pages, and I'm pretty sure that the developers have agreed among themselves that when it's a part of the standard they'll support it.

I agree. I don't know what it is about vector that makes people want multiple pages. Nobody questions that raster formats don't support multiple pages (except TIFF, but most applications don't support it). If you want a multi-page bitmap, you create two files and put them in a page layout application--nobody questions that. Yet raster and vector are both just image formats. Of course it doesn't bother me that multi-page support is enivitable.

I guess i can see both sides of the argument here...

I think though the multi-page vector supporters are people who want to produce something (perhaps a small leaflet)within the vector app that they are very familiar with and don't want to have to export their considerable graphic expertise....
(Multiple times for each graphic) to a print layout program (which they are not familiar with) when what they are producing is not the classified adds section of a newspaper.....

IE when the print and layout functionality in their vector app is adequate they can then do all the work where they feel comfortable.......And as they are probably fluent in vector illustration they don't have to go through the agony of exporting and laying out stuff... right out of their comfort zone....

This is exactly what I do.

I use a recent dev version (exports far better to PDF than 0.46 of april 2008) and have a single SVG for each page (or side) of my brochure. Then I save all these as pdf, in Inkscape. After that, I run a nice little Open Source tool called PDF Split And Merge to merge the various pdf files together into one new pdf.

Ooo! Multiple page support.

I have three questions:

1. What happens with a document that was created using layers?
* While layers aren't exactly necessary, they do facilitate using Inkscape.

2. If I determine that I'd prefer layers over multiple pages, is there some way to cleanly uninstall this plug-in?
* I'm using Ubuntu Linux, but instructions for Mac O/S and Windows would be welcome for those who use those systems.

3. What are the chances that the pages plug-in would work in tandem with the layers plug in?

@BobSongs:

1. All the elements from all layers will be gathered on the first page of the document when you create a multiple page document. After this, you can move elements on different pages.

2. The new version of the plugin will have this options. You will be able to uninstall the pages and they will all be transformed in layers.

3. Please see the reply from this topic: http://www.inkscapeforum.com/viewtopic.php?f=28&t=878&p=35154#p35186.

@heathenx:

Unfortunately yes, I had to write it in this way. The SVG standard does not include layers. The layers are created by the inkscape team using a group with a custom attribute. I am also using the groups to organize the pages. I use the current layer to display the current page number and to display all the elements of the current page and I use another hidden layer to organize the other pages. If you use layers for organization, you could very easy use the pages for organization. If you put things on a layer and then hide them to use elements from another layer and so on, this is exactly what this extension is doing.

To leave the possibility to use the layers, it would mean that the extension shouldn't use them. It would be very difficult to implement this extension without using some layers. This being said, this remains one of the TO DO things (re-enabling the layers) if the demanding of the feature will justify the time necessary to implement it. It would be much more complicated to implement something like this without the use of the layers. And even so, there are some issues that needs to be solved. For example, when you create a layer on a page, would it be visible on another page? If so, what about it's elements? Normally the elements should be visible only on the page in which they are created. Wouldn't this generate confusion?
