how to save a file for the printer

Postby rubins » Wed Aug 24, 2011 1:08 am

How do I save a file for the printing office? How can I be sure that the drawing is fitting exactly on the papersize. Do I have to apply a margin on all border sides? thanks for your help. Rubins

this is a very deep question
depends on the printer and what it is you are sending them

most I think want a cmyk pdf file to size with a specific bleed allowance, typically 1/8"
at least that is what I have had to deal with

so the question becomes, how do I save my image/file as cmyk?
so far for me, the only thing I have found that works reasonably well is doing graphics in inkscape and the actual layout in scribus so I can output a cmyk pdf file

I have seen tutorials that show how to use gimp with separate to create a tiff in cmyk and send that to your printer, kinda neanderthal from mpov, but yes it will work and does give you some color proofing

If you find other better or different please post back.

The cry is out for true cmyk support for inkscape but don't expect it any time soon. I don't think its part of the svg spec so it may never make it into the road map.

Feel free to correct me, it's better for me then leaving me misguided.

Hi Rubins,
The printing office should tell you what their requirements are. It's their job, and you are paying them. So you should not have to guess -- if they don't tell you, then ask them! After you have that info, share it with us, and we can tell you how to accomplish it with Inkscape. :D

If you know what size the finished product will be, you can set the page size in Document Properties, and draw the image accordingly. If the image is already drawn, you can scale it to the proper size, using Object menu > Transform. But then you will still need to make the appropriate page size in Doc Prop. As for margins, the printer should advise you as to their preference.

Pat Jr., have you seen this: viewtopic.php?f=11&t=5943? It's an extension for getting CMYK color for printing. Of course, we have no idea whether Rubins project will require CMYK color. Once he or she advises us, we will know what to suggest :D
