All my files missing when switching to version .48
Hello everyone! I have a slight problem that pissed me off this morning when I upgraded from version .46 to .48.All my old project files did not transfer to the newer version of Inkscape .48. I had to use Windows system restore to go back to the old version and get back all my files ...thank God. Inkscape installation wizard will remove the old version of Inkscape but does not seems to give you the opportunity to keep the old files on the previous version.Am I missing something? Please help

Hhmmm....well, your files are not kept within the Inkscape program....unless you somehow changed the location where they are kept. Normally they are stored under your user account, in the file manager. To my knowledge, they should not be affected at all by an upgrade.
When you install a new version of Inkscape, it will ask if you want to keep your Preferences. I guess most people would choose that, but it is an option. But it shouldn't affect your files at all. Unless again, you were saving them in C:/Program Files/Inkscape for some reason. It would be inappropriate to keep them there, and possibly unsafe.
When you were looking for your files, where were you looking? Where were you keeping your files? Usually it would be under some folder that is pre-defined to hold images. Like for Windows, that would be C:/user account/My Pictures.
I'm not sure if I would rely on Inkscape to uninstall the previous version. I had some trouble when I did that several years ago. I don't remember what the trouble was, but now I always uninstall "manually" before upgrading. And also, since you're upgrading anyway, why not go for the current stable version 0.48.4 rather than the older 0.48?

Thank you for your quick response. The reason I'm upgrading is that the new version includes the bleed and crop marks...very practical when doing artwork for commercial printing and also the possibility to add the Pantone color system used in the printing industry.I will try a clean reinstall of version .48.4 and let you know how it goes.

Re: All my files missing when switching to version .48
I managed to install version .48.4 without any problem and as I expected all my previous work was saved in the inkscape folder. Now,I need to find a way to include the Pantone ink system into inkscape. It works with SCRIBUS since the file are .eps.Inkscape doesn't seem to support this type of files....any ideas.I don't like working with the default color swab included in Inkscape. Thanks for your help!

HI.
There is three things you do very very wrong.
First of all, you save your files where Windows is installed, on the same partition. That means if Windows is installed over again, you will miss files that you doesn't have backup for.
Second - Saving your working file in the program folder itself. Not only for Inkscape, but most apps there is - if a situation of uninstalling the program, there is a severe risk of loosing that files. This risk of loosing files is also severe every time you upgrade the program.
Third, this is the most severe. You apparently have no backup of your files.
My conclusion - There is nothing wrong with Inkscape. There is a reason why you have a "my documents" folder on WIndows, that is to not store files in system/program folders where they might be lost. If you tend to store other files created with other programs in the folder where the program is installed, you'll take just the same risk of loosing your files when upgrading that program.

Thanks, all my inkscape files are kept in a Document folder and not a program files folder and backups of each files are made on a disk for safe keeping.

Re: All my files missing when switching to version .48
My guess is that when you uninstalled Inkscape, the file association was removed - from the registry, i believe. Then when you reinstalled, either the installer did not register Inkscape properly, or more likely, you downloaded a 7z archive and just unpacked it.
Either way, the thing to do is to go to your file types dialog and find svg and svgz and re-associate them with Inkscape, although this may not always be easy if Windows can't even see the application... But if it works, all your files should show the Inkscape icon again.

Your mind is what you think it is.

Well,I can choose to import Inkscape documents into Scribus if I want to with few problems except when dealing with bleed ,registration and crop marks for commercial printing.I have to repositioned the crop marks and registration marks everytime I import camera ready artwork into Scribus. I understand that is a well known problem and that the developers are working on it.Thanks for your help
