Inkscape encountered an internal error and will close now

Postby pachetepockets » Thu Jul 06, 2017 5:18 pm

Hello,

I have been using Inkscape for a while now, but I just bought a used Windows 7 computer and Inkscape is not working for me. I downloaded Inkscape 0.92.1 for Windows7 64-bit using the .exe download. It installs and launches fine. However when I try to import a file either from the file menu in Inkscape or from just dragging and dropping, it displays the error message "Inkscape encountered an internal error and will close now" then the program closes. This happens every time I try to import any file and makes the program useless to me. For reference, I have no unusual settings beyond the default installation of the program. Any help would be greatly appreciated, thank you.

Hi! Can you start Inkscape from the command line and tell us what that prints when you open the dialog?
(could be: https://bugs.launchpad.net/inkscape/+bug/1663884)

Off topic:

That report is specific to (unstable) GTK3 builds on Windows using (outdated) devlibs64 (works ok with MSYS2 builds of inkcape git master), and never affected official stable releases for Windows (which use GTK2).

The report which tracked known crashes with the GTK2 dialog (64bit builds only) was Bug #1322889 “[win64] GTK file picker crashes on choose”, which was closed with the release of Inkscape 0.92 (the crashes reported with earlier builds no longer reproduced).

Found that one, too, but the user states he/she is using 0.92.1, so I went to the less likely option.

We often see this when trying to open or import a very large file. Although other things might trigger that message as well. Have you tried importing something very small?

Are you able to use Inkscape otherwise? I mean, do the tools seem to work? Can you otherwise save and open SVG files? I don't really have any specific reason for asking those questions. But just looking to gather more info.

I'm not sure either if those bug reports would apply here, because the op says they get the error even with drag and drop - gtk dialog is not used. Well, not unless drag and drop uses the gtk dialog silently.

Could you share a file which produces this error, which we could test with?
