Warning: Cheesy Pop-Art questions.

http://fav.me/d4g6ehk

hope this works, (even instructions to post the image in the forum topic would be helpful... the codes don't seem to embed it)

Question 1: this image (initially) is generated by some online code, that returns a text file in http.... then you can only guess how many forms I've transferred it into.... (I have now downloaded Gimp as well)... but my main purpose in learning InkScape was to take advantage of the Scalability... however the interim state of jpg has interrupted the goal. The online font is smoothly scalable as html (in Chrome, anyway), but Ihave used screen-capture to create the jpg to import into Inkscape... Overall, I'm dissappointed with my inability to make this image zoomable with the same smoothness of the font/image...

Any help toward this goal will be appreciated...(yes, ultimately this belongs on a t-shirt... I'd wear it-- I was in no way an MJ fan... but I was alive in the 80's and his genius was undeniable during that era) For Bubbles' sake, help me please...

Welcome to InkscapeForum!

Even following your link, I can't see your image. Apparently DA has it as "mature content" which I have blocked. But there are plenty of other members who probably can see it, and can help :D

If it's a JPG, then you won't be able to scale it, even imported into Inkscape (without loss of quality). You'd have to use Inkscape's Trace Bitmap feature to convert it to SVG, before you could scale it without pixelation. And without seeing the image, I have no idea whether you could get a good trace. (The Trace Bitmap feature is not meant to accurately reproduce images. So things like family photos or landscapes, don't always look very good when traced with this tool.)

Also, possibly because I can't see the image, I'm not sure what your goal is regarding the text/font. Sometimes certain text/fonts will scale fairly well, even in raster formats, especially if it's a very blocky font, without much roundness. But for true scalability, it must be in a vector format, like SVG.

If I understood what you were trying to do I think you need to find the clear photo without any text over it, and create text objects to use them as a clip or mask where the text areas show the photo and everything outside the text is black.

brynn,
Thank you for the welcome. I dabbled with trace bitmap and I agree it is not effective for the resolution I desire for the text. Thank you for the tip. I had not considered the scalability of 'blockier' fonts, so again nice tip (not applicable here).

pyrkos,
Thanks for the reply, and that is probably an excellent solution. I will attempt that.

to clarify my goal:

The desired effect is somewhat of an optical illusion: From a distance the design, on the media of t-shirt/print, the image appears almost photomosaic, or digitized(revealing a clearly identifiable subject: human face). Upon a closer perspective, the individual pixels are seen as letters, perfectly clear(smooth fonts) that contain the joke/copy, prose or text. Note: its not that original, I'm only following a proven design concept, but I was trying to learn the software, and screen/print techniques(to copy this effect).

I was hoping I would discover that by importing a jpg into Inkscape at a pixel-by-pixel ratio, one could continue the continuity of scaling that can be seen with an http browser and an appropriate web(W3C?) font.

Thanks, still learning...

Last question, different topic.
Where best to post topics with questions about features of Inkscape? If unnecessary, please advise. Briefly,
Previous Selection
Move by reference (to other objects)
and the derivative: a useful Distance(between selected points) tool.
Mirror, quickest solution
Division at open paths' intersection (node solution perhaps? I found this to be difficult )

Thanks again, Inkscape holds promise as a good skill set!! Like it so far...

..also I set the maturity filter at dA to warning due to ideological subject matter, I didn't want to offend any of their members as I am new there as well as Inkscape

Where best to post topics with questions about features of Inkscape?

If it's an idea for a new feature that you want to discuss, it should go in Inkscape Ideas. If it's to discuss a current features not related to an image you're working on, it should go in Software Issues. If it has to do with solving a problem in an image you're working on, it should go in the Help with using Inkscape forum. If it's a possible bug, also in the Help forum. (If the bug is confirmed, it will be later moved to Software issues.)

Previous Selection -- There's currently no way to reselect the last thing that was selected, but it is a much requested new feature. You can use Tab and Shift + Tab with Selection tool engaged, to cycle through objects one at a time. But I understand it's not ideal.

Useful Distance Tool -- Inkscape doesn't have a measurement tool, but again, much requested. There is a path measurement extension (Extensions > Visualize Path > Measure Path. But it actually writes the distance, so it's not the perfect solution. I often want a distance, but not written on the canvas, lol. But I guess there are fields of interest where it's helpful. Inkscape has fully configurable grids though, which can help with measuring.

The rest of your topics need further description, I think. And possibly I haven't even guessed your exact meaning for those 2 above? But certainly please feel free to start a new topic or topics, as needed :D

You may indeed get more replies on this topic. The forum has been a bit slow this week, but usually "how best to do this" messages get a lot of attention.
(No worries about the DA content thing -- it's my choice.)

maybe you should assign the text as a clone and create the half tone effect using the text.

ty redbeltboxer,

that's very interesting, I've been reading about the clone tool, waiting for a good reason to try it...
also plenty of effects I have to learn...
