[solved] path difference problem

Postby capponz » Sun May 29, 2016 3:43 pm

Hi,
I use Inkscape 0.91 on a Mint 17.3 OS.
I have two objects and want to get a difference. Inkscape comes up with the bottom line message

Code: Select all

Two objects selected as types group ... one of the objects is not a path.

I found another thread with some suggestions about that also in this forum....:
I'm not Brynn, but I can offer a suggestion: where your info line at the bottom says
'2 objects of types Path, Group

needs to say 'two objects of type path' only before most boolean ops will work. select each object and read the status line to see which one is the group. select it and ungroup it. If you have several paths it will be a problem, but you might be able to combine them into one and then try your boolean.
Your mind is what you think it is.

Unfortunately my try to ungroup the "grouped" object and set it to "object to path" does not work at all.
And thats the reason difference does also not work. actually none of the path operations do work on this kind of object.

My questions ... can I force an ungroup?
how can I get this object to be a path?

thank you very much

P.S>: the mountains are/is the object, thanks

Welcome to the forum !

So what is it that you are trying to do ?

I can ungroup the mountain without a problem.
The group consists of seven identical objects, all on top of each other, two black and five green.

A difference with what ? All your objects are already paths.

If you cant ungroup, how do you know you cant perform the difference ?

There is a way to enter a group or to directly select an object in a group (by holding down CTRL).
Maybe you could directly select your mountain object and cut it.
Then paste outside the group.

capponz, how do you do the 'ungroup' that doesn't work? Right-click -> Ungroup? Via the button at the top? Via keyboard shortcut?

Hi Moini,
thanks for your reply.
... I click on the object to mark it first and
then I go to -> menu -> object -> ungroup.
(But I also tried Shift-Strg-G for that operation.)

after that I draw a rectangle, change this new object to a path, place it it overlapping over the the mountain, mark the mountain too
and then try
path-> difference ....
inkscape tells me constantly that one of the objects is not a path.
"Two objects selected as types group ... one of the objects is not a path."

and that's the part which does not work.

@Espermaschine
Then paste outside the group.

in my case there is no group. the mountain is shown as one single object. before ungrouping and after.
There is no visible effect.

thanks guys!

If you only ungroup once, there are still groups in the selection. Take a look at the status bar to find the info that will help you in most cases ;-)

Hi Polygon,
awesome that helped.
thank you soo much.

There must have been something wrong with this mountains. I played around with other objects and it worked just fine !?!.

Having a workaround makes me happy.

many thanks guys!!!
