Need Help: export to Inkscape and file cleanup

Postby toddbg » Tue Feb 26, 2013 5:21 am

Hi Everyone -
I am having a problem with a SketchUp file, I need to export this to use in Inkscape.

However when I bring this in as a svg, png or pdf I get streaks in the faces of the SketchUp object.

I need to be able to bring this in in some method that will allow me to get rid of those lines.

link to SketchUp file:
https://dl.dropbox.com/u/199646/Temperance_testing.skp
Link to Inkscape file:
https://dl.dropbox.com/u/199646/scroll_ ... yscale.svg

Thanks in advance.

Well, I can't see the Sketchup file, since I don't have the program. But the SVG file looks fine. I don't see any streaks.....but I don't see any faces either, so maybe I haven't seen the entire image.

Hhmm...well, the SVG opens in my browser from your link. Let me get it into Inkscape, and maybe I can see the problem....
Unfortunately, still no. No streaks, no faces.
But I do see that it's a fairly large file. And sometimes Inkscape can have trouble rendering a large file correctly, which can produce streaks. Try changing the zoom. Even a 1% change in zoom can fix it. Or you could try File menu > Vacuum Def, to reduce the size. Also, there is a lot of content in the file that isn't visible, that's being hidden behind the ribbon/sash and a white object, and possibly also by a mask. So you could easily delete a lot of those trees. And then there are so many trees that it's created a solid black area. So you could easily substitute a single black object for that part, and have just a few trees towards the top of that area, to make the silhouette of the forest.

Also, you have 3 copies of the word "temperance", and they each are made up of 1352 objects (grouped)! Hhm, upon further investigation, I see that the black part of the letters are single object. But there's some gray shading with a black stroke around each letter, which is made up of many tiny paths and small objects. It's probably something to do with how the file was converted to SVG. If you made the text in Inkscape, you could save a whole lot of KBs, and maybe even a MB or 2. In fact, everything could be done in inkscape, resulting in a much smaller file size. Although the trees can't be made automatically (like they probably are in Sketchup). But you could use a black object, and far fewer trees to make the same kind of effect. There's even a tiny 0.1 inch long path with 22 nodes!

I would suggest making 5 or 6 trees in the other program, convert those to SVG, open in Inkscape, and then make the whole thing in Inkscape. I wouldn't be surprised if the whole thing could be done in less than 1 MB!!
