GTK dont play well with CursorFX

Postby TulipVorlax » Thu Sep 17, 2015 7:36 pm

Hi all,

First of, i'm not really an Inkscape user (yet) because i'm more of a programmer than a graphical artist.
But i have a friend artist and i'm his personnal computer guy and since he is old and dont want to bother with learning english, i'm usully the one that need to learn how to use and do things in softwares like Wings 3D (an open source 3d modeler of wich the last french translation is from me), Blender and now Inkscape, before i can show him how to use them.

But, for the last few years now, i had a big problem in using GTK based software like GIMP and Inkscape.
There was a problem on my computer that i was unable to solve, until today.
So i just registered here to share my fidings with others that could encounter similars problems.

The problem was that after a few second or minutes of using Inkscape (was also happening in GIMP but the UI been made of multiple windows made it less severe), i was unable to click on any button of the toolbars, they wasn't even reacting to Hover events as if Inkscape wasn't detecting the mouse any more. But the main menu was working as usual. In GIMP i also had to use the space bar after clicking some button on any dialog window like the one to resize an image or the one to save it on disk.

A few days ago, i went with my friend artist to a local Fablab in wich he wanted something to be laser cut. They are using Inkscape on the computer connected to the laser cutter device. If anyone care to know, it was at the EchoFab in Montréal, the city where we are living. One can easilly find their web site using any search engine if needed. I think they might have a picture of the laser cutter...

So, we were there and we tried to use Inkscape but my friend had chosen the wrong file type while saving his Photoshop CS6 path back home. The file on his USB stick was an AI and we never manage to find a way to convert it at the lab, and after returning home, even free online converters couldn't convert the PS AI file, they was giving an error. So i said to my friend that maybe his path was badly formed or something and that he would be better off learning to use Inkscape that can save in SVG since at the lab it's the file format they are using.

But, he can't learn softwares alone. He ask me every few minutes "How do we do [insert action here]". It's not that much of a problem, since my written english is not too bad, i can easilly Google things in english and tell him what i find (in our first language). But, it would be better if i can learn the software before my friend comes asking questions. And to to this, i had to solved my problem in using Inkscape (and GIMP as a bonus).

We are also Wacom tablet users, although i don't use mine a lot since i'm not really an artist. The last time i used my little Bamboo was before moving to a new home some months ago and i used it in the Sculptris 3D software. But, anyways i was more or less certain that my problem in using GTK softwares was comming from a driver interfering with the mouse. I'm also using a G700 gaming mouse and pinpointing exactly where was the problem wasn't an easy task. Since I was in the process of upgrading a laptop to Windows 10, in fact it is done and now i created a Win 10 DVD using MS tool for this, i was thinking that after reinstalling Win 10 from scratch i could use the laptop to try to find what is causing my problem by installing softwares one at a time.

But scratch that. I'm pretty sure now that the problem was caused by Cursor FX.
Yeah, i have to admit that i prefer to have on screen a pretty blue cursor instead of the default Windows one. Before i assembled a new Win 7 computer a few years ago for each of us, me and my friend artist, we were still on Windows XP on wich i had the Microsoft Plus! that included a few cursors themes. For many years my cursor was a small green leave...
But what happened while trying to figure out my problem with GTK apps is that at one moment i noticed that Inkscape's cursors wich tell us wich tool is selected had been replaced by my blue cursor from Cursor FX.
That is when it hitted me !

I also noticed in the past some strange behavior in some games i played on the PC; the game cursor was replace by the Cursor FX and to slove this i simply had to "ALT-TAB" out and in of the game (to tell the thruth i play games windowed or else Greenshot can't capture anything from them to post on wikis or forums; clicking on taskbar to minimize and restore the game window was sufficient).

So, i deactivated the Cursor FX blue cursor returning to the default Windows 7 one and now i can hapilly use GTK apps.

To my understanding, it's not completly the fault of Cursor FX. I think there might be a small problem in the GTK framework. Why ? Because i dont have any others apps or softwares that dont play well with Cursor FX. Even Blender doesn't mind. So, it's the GTK. But i wont go tell them to fix their thing because i dont think they would since it doesn't affect many people.

Thanks for reading. ;-)

I'm not sure I understand. If every tool (except CS6) say there's a problem that's probably because it uses unsupported features.
Maybe try one of the solution here to get a svg instead of an AI

Maybe you could find an alternative to cursorfx @

Likely yet another variation of [ as far as we know similarly affects the Windows port of GIMP too, so not an application-specific issue but likely one to be addressed in the GTK2/Win32 backend of the Gtk+ toolkit (or in the various native Windows applications which may trigger this) ]
