, Say I have an object, for example a square. I want the square to fit up to a circle. (the circle being a jpeg, and I CAN'T manipulate it.)
Now, I want to use my pencil tool to draw over the square to match the curve of the circle. How do I then cut that part off or erase it alone when it's stil part of that object? (the junk part of the square I don't want.)
I can't really use the node cut method either, as the actual object is much more intricate than a square, and even then I couldn't match the curve correctly.
Cut an object by a curve?
Re: Cut an object by a curve?
Hhmm, we may need a screenshot to get the right idea. But it sounds like you would want to use Clipping. (http://tavmjong.free.fr/INKSCAPE/MANUAL ... pping.html)
The curve that you drew over the square will be the clipping path, except that it will probably need to be a closed path. So depending on where you want the "cut" to occur, in all the rest of the area besides the curve, you'll have to draw the path to extend far enough around the square so as not to clip away the wanted parts, then connect it to the other end of the curve. That might actually follow the boundary of the square, but not seeing your project or have more details, I can't be sure. So you'll be using the curve path for the clipping path, and you'll be clipping the square object. It sounds like it's not just a simple square, so be sure to select all the parts of the square, to make sure all the parts get clipped.
Oh also, you can clip a JPG. So that might be an option, I'm guessing, again not knowing many details.
It's better to draw the clipping path accurately to begin with, before clipping, but with current versions of Inkscape, you can later edit the clipping path, if you want. The instructions can be found at the link above, but if you have trouble, please don't hesitate to reply back
