I've just installed Inkscape and Gimp on a fresh install of Ubuntu 11.04. The "Bitmap editor" option under Inkscape preferences is set to Gimp and even the system has been reeboted after setting it. Still, the "Edit externally" option when right-clicking a bitmap isn't available. What else should i try?

Do you have regular GIMP installation or unstable GIMP 2.7.x from mrw's PPA?

My Gimp is 2.6.11 (installed through the Synaptic Package Manager, just like like always)

How do you solve a problem?

I have GIMP 2.6, but I don't have that option working either. Not that I need it to, but just for additional info. I've never known this option to work.

I do know that that developers sometimes put commands or menu items into the interface, which they know don't work. Apparently they expect to add the functionality at some point in the future, but can't seem to wait for the functionality before putting it in the interface. I don't know, maybe they hope to entice volunteers to write the code for it.

Anyway, maybe that's the case here? Maybe it's in the interface, but it's not supposed to be functional yet?

I am using GIMP 2..6.12 and Inkscape 0.48 (all installed by Ubuntu Software Centre) on Ubuntu 12.04

GIMP is set in Inkscape Preferences as bitmap editor

When right clicking with selected raster image - there is "Edit Externally..." command -> It is inactive.
