Is there a way to see the line while I'm drawing it? When I use the calligraphy tool it's invisible until I stop drawing it (except for a very temporary red "trail") there is no permanent trail, it's driving me crazy, thanks

I think the trail you see depends on the tools default style( or last used style) not sure which. try checking it out in Inkscape's preferences.
