1. your Inkscape version (Help > About, copy the full version name),
2. how you installed it (which file/repository was used),
3. and your operating system/version number

".ai" is a very complex Adobe file format which can include lots of trickery Inkscape don´t know of. If the file you want to load has an PDF stream you might succeed - no guarantee given.
When it´s an free file you can post a link and we can try a translation into an Inkscape friendly format.

Tragically I cannot upload the file because it is with sensible content. Are there other possibilities how I can reach enough information from the file that you can decide what to do?

Maybe try to contact the author and ask for an exported PDF file instead of ".ai".

yes, this could be one solution but I wanted also a solution for the future. That I can avoid in future this trouble. you understand? I thought inkscape could do everything easily, beacuse I don´t use it very often. This is also the reason why I don´t want to spend much money for adobe

I understand - but the format is proprietary/closed source. The only thing that maybe is interpretable is the EPS/PDF stream of the file.
The link contains a list of programs that pretends to open ".ai" documents. Good luck.

What polygon means with the pdf thing is: try if Inkscape can open the file if you rename it to filename.pdf instead of filename.ai.

Do you mean "sensitive" contents? Meaning nudity or violence or something like that? Or is it not your contents, and you can't share them?

If it's nudity or violence, you could upload it with a warning about the contents. Then people won't open it if they don't want to see that kind of thing. If it's too large to upload here, you could upload somewhere else, and give us the link. (Possibly AI files aren't allowed here, I don't remember? But if that's the case, you could put in a ZIP file.)

But if it's not your property to share, I'm not sure what to do. Maybe someone would be able to help you via personal email?
