Converting an image to EPS

Postby e1234 » Tue Mar 27, 2018 8:23 pm

Hi all,

I am very new to this so excuse my severe lack of understanding. I have a JPG file i'm trying to vectorise on Inkscape. I have uploaded it onto it and traced the path as I saw on a YouTube video, when I then exported this to PDF the lines are much smoother at 6400% compared to previously. Is this still a raster image or is it now vector?

When I come to try and export it as an EPS image and open it with this EPSViewer software I have, the image comes out completely blurry. Is that because my image is not a vector at all and I have just neatened it up somehow or is it a software issue? Does the file I begin with need to be different and does JPG and PNG files mean it cannot ever change from a rasterised image?

Help

Your PDF seems to have exported paths (vector), because you get smooth lines at such a tight zoom. Your trace probably went ok :)

The EPS sounds problematic, most likely hasn't exported as vector paths. I remember other users also having problems with EPS not exporting as vector objects. It's probably down to some dependencies or configuration.

You just have to make sure you have vector objects during the export. You can vectorize many raster images easily, rasters are not the end at all ;)

If you can upload the traced svg file to dropbox and post a link to the file, we can get a better idea what's happening.

Have a nice day.

I'm using Inkscape 0.92.2 (5c3e80d, 2017-08-06), 64 bit win8.1

The Inkscape manual has lots of helpful info! http://tavmjong.free.fr/INKSCAPE/MANUAL/html/

Also, it might go better to export the EPS directly from Inkscape (technically Save As EPS), instead of going to PDF and then EPS.
