How would you recreate this logo?

Postby Henry432 » Sat Aug 02, 2014 3:26 am

Here is the logo I am trying to recreate but have no idea how to do it. If any of you guys can teach me how to do this than it would be great!

Here is the logo:

Hi.

Attached is how I would make it.
Not so complicated, can be done in minutes, if you are familiar with the node editor tool.

So what is depicted:
First a dodecagon was drawn with the * tool, then it was converted to a path (Ctrl+Shift+C), all nodes selected of it and turned to be smooth ones,
resized the width and height of it to 200 pixels.
Then it was duplicated twice (Ctrl+Shift+D), and the duplicants were resized to 350/350 and 550/550 px sizes.

After that, the unnecessary path segments were removed by unconnecting nodes,
and the align and distribute tool used to place the parts to position.

Then objects were combined together, and nodes connected, and a new 250/250 circle was added,
and object rotated 45°.

That is it in a nutshell.

is this one of your precision things ?

i mean, whats the reason you dont start with an ellipse instead ?

It's that nodes are calculated with much more accuracy than the segments displayed.
For practical reasons an octagon would be enough for a higher precision than the regular ellipses -in 0.48.4 at least-,
and may fit better with the 45° turn.
As if ellipses are converted to paths in that version I use, they will have only four nodes.
The more nodes the curve has, the more accurate it can be.

Why 12?
Because it is in connection with the year-month system.
Also with the default settings, by holding Ctrl and rotating, it will look exactly the same.

Nice one Lazur URH!

Always interesting to see how different folks think.

I approached this completely differently...(svg attached to follow along...)

First I drew a thick stroked square using the rectangle tool with the corner radius dragged out all the way so it looked like a circle.
Then I drew a filled, no-stroke circle in the middle and aligned them.
I added a couple of vertical guidelines to match the thickness of the stroke (which are needed later for accurate node alignment)
Then using the rectangle tool I ctrl-dragged the initial square out into a rounded rectangle (the ctrl key constrains the motion to orthagonal moves)
Convert the rectangle stroke to a path
Draw a rectangle aligned with the guideline and intersect it with the stroke path
Use the node tool to grab the two inner nodes and ctrl-drag them to snap to the other guide.
Add two more guides lined up with the inside of the shape and shift-drag the node handles out to make the curves at the end. (this is why the guides are needed, as Inkscape will not let you ctrl-drag node handles to constrain movement and also snap.)
Union the shapes then rotate 45degrees.

Easier to do then to type out an explanation of the steps!
