Any tutorials on changing the GUI in Inkscape?

Postby michaelws » Sat Feb 11, 2017 12:26 pm

I was noticing some of the videos on Youtube Inkscape had a pleasing dark grey background and the toolbars and such were re-arranged. Is there a tutorial (for dummies like me) that gives some insight into this process?

Thanks for any help with this.

Toolbar layout options can be found at View -> Default/Custom/Wide (and you can hide them)

The canvas background color can be set in the document properties (File -> Document properties). Note: this color may be exported, depending on the export format and the color's transparency.

The icon sets can be changed, too: To install a new icon set, find one on the web or in your Inkscape installation's icons directory. Copy the file into the directory listed at Edit > Preferences > System: User config, subdirectory 'icons' (may need to be created) and name it 'icons.svg'. After a restart of Inkscape, the new icon set will be used.

To set a different theme for the whole app (i.e. colors) you will either need to modify your system theme (if on Linux), or you can exchange a file named gtkrc (see http://logosbynick.com/how-to-make-inkscape-go-dark/ for a tutorial).
Something doesn't work? - Keeping an eye on the status bar can save you a lot of time!
