Single stroke object to path (aka "solid" letters)

Postby cputeq » Sun Jan 31, 2016 2:11 pm

Hello everyone, fairly brand-new to Inkscape, cool program :)

I've searched multiple places and can't find what I'm asking - perhaps I'm asking it wrong?

What I'm trying to do: Using Inkscape, if possible, I would like to type in text, say

"This is great"

and using the Object to Path command, is it possible to somehow export a "solid" path of these letters? Instead of outlining each letter?

(The reason I ask - I'm using a plugin to export these paths to G-Code for a laser engraver, and "hollow" letters are too large)

For instance, every time I change text to a path, it results in "hollow" letters. I realize this is to reflect the actual font's style, but I just need a basic "skeleton" export.

I can of course export individual paths as "single-wide" lines (and they look great!) but this is very difficult to make text with.

suggestions? Thanks :0)

What seems you´re looking for (CNC purpose maybe?) is called single-line fonts. What we usually use in computer graphics are so called - guess what - are outline fonts. May your search engine be with you.

I think you might be looking for Hershey Text and here's an Inkscape extension for that: http://www.evilmadscientist.com/2011/he ... ing-fonts/

However, if that's not it, it would be helpful if you can show us examples of what you mean, instead of explaining with words.

This.

(I am also looking for how to generate custom letters with Hershey text.)

Thank you!@

Yes everyone I was using wrong terminology and single-line text was exactly what I was looking for. I managed to upgrade Inkscape (was using old version) which has Hershey built-in! Of course I had to get my Laserengraver plugin to work again, but that was fairly easy.

Thanks a bunch!
Here's what I was ultimately trying to do (on a pen I made)
