Sublayers display above main layer

Postby capnhud » Wed Feb 11, 2009 10:25 pm

I have just started using the sublayer functionality of inkscape and something appears amiss. Maybe I have some setting wrong but each time that I create a sub-layer of a main layer, the objects on the sublayer appear above the main layer. Is this by design or do I need to change something? I am using the latest Windows development version.

I have noticed some quirkiness too. Can't tell if it's intended or a glitch. Set up your sub-layers and then take the main layer and move the z-order to the top (not in the layer dialog but on the selection toolbar). I think everything should be good after that.

Does anyone know how to lower the sublayer in the z order? Because in the layer dialogue it is showing as a subcomponent of the main layer, but the objects on the sublayer display above the main layer.

I'm sorry capnhud. I missed your post yesterday. :(

I was referring to the "standard" z-order tool that is on the :tool_selector: dynamic toolbar. After your layers have been set up you can use this to move the master layer to the top. Use the layers dialog box to move the sub-layers up and down accordingly.

I had to use the XML editor to move the sublayer to the bottom of the main layer. Unless I was doing something wrong I could not lower or raise the layer when selected in the layer dialogue. Ok all is well now thanks heathenx .

This is what I meant. I made a quick-n-dirty for you.

How are you assigning the objects to the separate layers? I am assuming that your doing shift+pgdwn

First select the object that you wish to move and then do a Shift+PageUp or Shift+PageDown to move the object to a different layer. If you do not have your layer dialog box open when doing this then glance at your status bar and it will display what layer you are moving it to.

I see we are posting at the same time. This is what I had did in the first place, but for some reason in my file this process was causing the sublayers to appear above the main layer. And choosing the main layer would not cause it to raise above the sublayer until I went into the xml editor. So I was doing the process correct all along it is just inkscape acting funny with me again.

Yes, you are right...and my screencast shows that to be true. However, instead of using the XML editor you can simple just move the main layer's z-order to the top and all is well again. Nevertheless, XML editing or z-order. Both work the same so whatever floats your boat. :)

This is why we need an option to see object and layers within the same GUI.

I agree. The layer situation could use a refresh.
