Import PDF problem - no fonts

Postby alkopop79 » Tue Apr 24, 2012 3:51 am

I created a PDF last year with Inkscape (Mac os x, snow leo). I cannot find the SVG files and when I import the PDF, the fonts aren't there. I tried to open it and import it, with no success: the fonts are always missing. When I open the same PDF with Acrobat, everything seems fine. Any ideas why?

Welcome to InkscapeForum!

When you import the PDF, isn't there a dialog asking how to handle text? Try changing some of those options (one at a time). Inkscape does have a few quirks on Macs, but I can't remember if this is one of them. But here's a link to an overview: http://wiki.inkscape.org/wiki/index.php ... fic_issues

If you still have trouble, could you show us the PDF?

In Inkscape0.48 for Windows there is only one text handling option for PDF and EPS imports, the option "Handle text as text". A feature like "Handle text as path" would be very useful, since Inkscape seem not to import the fonts from the PDF, but just tries to match its own fonts to the PDF's as best as it can. For example, all the parentheses and simple punctuation is not imported when I import a PDF file in Inkscape.

I'm not good enough to do a patch for that, but it would make Inkscape a lot more powerful it could be fixed.

Oh, I do remember that, now that you mention it. Hhhmmm...I don't know why there's not a Text as path option. Often when an obvious feature seems to be missing, it's a case of not having an SVG/XML standard. I would assume that's the issue here, but I could be wrong.

Just to be clear though, do you mean all the text is missing? Or do you mean that some default font has been substituted for whatever font you originally assigned? If it's the font being substituted, it could be because you don't have that font installed on that computer. Did you maybe create the PDF on a different computer?
