Hello all,
I'm attempting a logo using Inkscape. usually I use Gimp for all my graphics related stuff and I love it. Inkscape is a totally new thing for me and I am really getting to enjoy it but there's so much to learn, it's just like when I started out with Gimp.
What I'd like to do is to create a crayon effect, a bit like the attached image.
Any help from you guys will be greatly appreciated!
Thanks,
Nick.

Re: Crayon texture for path needed.
Welcome aboard!
You can use filter effect to simulate similar patterns, like mentioned here.
But those are raster based ones, and as you want such thing for a logo, you need to have it as vector.
You can use the autotrace option on a scanned drawing with such splatters, or on a raster image from gimp, if you are familiar with it's brushes.
Also, you can draw such jagged lines many other ways.
Will post an example soon.

Re: Crayon texture for path needed.
There are many ways to play with the tools to create something similar, this is a quick example:

Somehow the calligraphy tool's stroke I missed to keep and the hole cutting to it is not broke to steps.
Basically to cut holes, select the already "hollow" path and break it apart (Ctrl+Shift+K),
then remove the large path from the selection and combine back together the ones still selected (Ctrl+K).
Subtract that path -and duplicants of it- from the calligraphed stroke.

Lazur URH,
It never ceases to surprise me just how helpful people on forums can be, and how much time and work they'll invest in helping a complete stranger learn something new - and all for free.
I have some reading to do now, and lots of trying out in inkscape. I'm pretty busy all weekend which is a bit irritating as I want to get stuck into this but I will be posting back at some point, no doubt.
For now, thank you so much for your input!
All the best,
Nick.

Re: Crayon texture for path needed.
OK, so already I am stuck.
Can you explain what you mean by 'spray tool use over a small dot on the path'?
Thanks,
Nick.

Re: Crayon texture for path needed.
I drew a small ellipse, converted it to a path (Ctrl+Shift+C),
then when it was selected, clicked on the spray tool icon,
and sprayed manually along the path below -a bit here, a bit there.
That tool creates clones so save before using it as it might take lot of resources to unlink the clones
of the parent -avoiding to select more than 2000 clones at a time is a good idea too.
After that, to add them together press Ctrl++ -numpad key-.
Before that adding together, you can try the tweak tool too, to randomise the rotation and randomise the size of the small dots a bit.

Re: Crayon texture for path needed.
Could you finish your design?
Can we see it?

Re: Crayon texture for path needed.
Hi there, I abandoned this in the end as the client changed their mind. Sorry for not updating you and thank you for taking the time to help. I'm sure I'll use this effect in the future.

Re: Crayon texture for path needed.
In case you ever, do, I'm pretty sure you can find a filter that will do a crayon effect. I thought I saw some at Open Clipart, search "ivan_louette".
