Export .ai file?

Postby ydacs » Mon Apr 07, 2008 2:46 pm

I'm an inkscape noob but I have searched these forums and googled but can't seem to find how to save an .ai file. There is mention that inkscape can save .ai files:

http://wiki.inkscape.org/wiki/index.php/FAQ#What_formats_can_Inkscape_import.2Fexport.3F

Inkscape can natively save as SVG, SVGZ, PDF (version 0.46), Postscript/EPS/EPSi, Adobe Illustrator (*.ai), LaTeX (*.tex), and POVRay (*.pov).

With the help of extensions, Inkscape can open/save as PDF, EPS, AI, Dia, Sketch and some others. In version 0.46, PDF import is native (no extensions required) and much improved.

i've tried everything inside inkscape as well as trying to figure out how to find and install the extensions but can't figure it out either.

Any assistance is appreciated.

Thx!

This is definitely something that needs clarification. The file formats claimed to be supported by Inkscape and what actaully is supported seem to be two very different things.

I can confirm that on windows, Inkscape cannot open [save as] AI files (as far as I can see). It possible on other OSes Inkscape could open AI files, perhaps with the assistance of third-party software - I don't know.

Depending on why you want to save as AI, you might prefer to save as PDF or EPS instead.

Thanks for the reply. I only need to Save as an .ai not open. The documentation says inkscape should be able to save .ai natively and via an extension. Can you clarify?

Thx!

Sorry, I meant to say 'save as' not 'open'. Check the advise on this page and see if it work for you - http://tavmjong.free.fr/INKSCAPE/MANUAL ... port-Other

Save out a .pdf and rename the extension to .ai
Apparently older versions of Illustrator used to use .pdf or something...
