Typing text becomes unworkably slow

Postby twiki » Fri Mar 08, 2013 4:00 am

The error has already been reported:

https://bugs.launchpad.net/inkscape/+bug/924657

and returns the same for all versions of InkScape on both Windows XP and Win7.

Possible that such a problem has not been solved yet?

In short: just write a paragraph with more than 500 characters InkScape
crashes and you can not work, even on powerful machines
such as i3 and i5

Any suggestions?
THANX

Welcome to InkscapeForum!

Absolutely possible! I reported bugs in 2008 and 2009 which still aren't fixed. Otoh, a couple of bugs I reported in 2011 and 2012 have been fixed. It's hard for ordinary Inkscape users like me to understand how the developers decide which bugs have priority. But I trust that they know what they're doing.

We are expecting, with the next major version release (0.49) a new renderer, which is expected to (at least partially) mitigate many of the performance issues which have plagued Inkscape for some time. It now sounds like we might have 1 more bug fix release.....rats, I can't remember the proper terminology....we'll probably see 0.48.5 before 0.49 is released....I can't remember what that's called, as opposed to "major version release" * Anyway, the last I heard 0.49 was expected to be released this year. But if there's going to be another bug fix release (the last I heard) perhaps 0.49 will be pushed back a little. Note that's just me speculating! I have no real knowledge about release dates!

Anyway, this delay between typing text, and text being shown on the page, to me, sounds like just the kind of thing that the new rendered might help with. But I should stress that I'm certainly no expert on the topic of the new renderer. But maybe someone who's using a dev version of 0.49 (on a susceptible system) will want to test?

Meanwhile, I wonder if you could use Scribus (open source desktop publishing). It's quite compatible with SVG :D

*afterthought - possibly called "point release"??
