Why won't my picture cut?

Postby hardworkingmom » Sat Oct 16, 2010 10:48 pm

Please can someone help me. I have reworked a number of pictures in order to cut them with my roland cutter and they have all worked well, however this one won't cut the graphic only the rectangles?!?!?!? I have redrawn it twice and still get the same result?
Thanx

I'm not familiar with cutters (as you may remember). So I don't know exactly what to look for. But I can tell you what I notice about your image, and maybe you will get some kind of clue? (that was not meant to be rude)(I'm the one that needs a clue, lol!)

The rectangles are in a locked layer, Layer 1. (I would think locking might prevent the cutting, but apparently not so.) The santas are in Layer 2, unlocked. I don't know how the machine handles layers. Also, the rectangles, I found after unlocking, are individuals. And they ARE rectangles, not paths.

But the biggest clue might be (for all I know  ) that all the santas are subpaths of one single compound path. Not grouped, but compound path. To make them individuals might take a small bit of selecting, and possibly recombining.
1 - Select, then Path menu > Break apart. This also breaks apart all the paths within each santa. So if you need them to be combined, then go on to #2.
2 - Select (using rubberband/drag select) each whole santa, then Path menu > Combine

I have seen, in other topics, where some kind of command called Weld fixed a cutting problem (not an Inkscape thing, something about the machine and its software). But I don't remember what kind of machine was involved.

SO, hopefully this will be helpful for you. Or otherwise, maybe someone who knows about your cutter will be along shortly. I'm going to move this topic to our Inkscape and Cutters forum, for that reason, but you can still find it here. (I believe that SVG uploads are allowed there now, but I remember that they weren't always.)

Thanx for the advice. Tried one more thing before yours, put everything in one layer and combined it all and now it cuts?!?!? Go figure?!?!? Don't understand these things, but at least now it's working.

i cant see the image right now - i dont have svg viewer where i am at.

but what we have done before is make the image 4xs the size you need - then export it as a png - then bring it back into inkscape a then revector it - it will cut correct -however if there is alot of colors that bay not be the best - or if you want to change the text that may not be the best
