Intro and question

Postby cayde » Mon May 16, 2011 1:26 am

Hi everyone,
I just discovered Inkscape, and in searching the web trying to find an answer to my question I found this forum which looks like it will be a wealth of information in my learning process.

My question is, I have a 3 1/2" round ball (Christmas ornament), I am trying to cut a 2" vinyl decal to put on the ornament but because of the curve of the ornament the decal won't lay flat. I worked on my image with the bend feature but after numerous tries still couldn't get the decal to lay flat. Any pointers, or ideas would be great.

Thanks for any help, and I will probably be hanging out here daily, reading and learning! :D

Welcome to InkscapeForum, cayde!

If I understand what the problem is, it has nothing to do with Inkscape. You're trying to make the flat decal curved, and there's no way to do that, without making little creases in the decal. Inkscape can't change the shape of the decal, only the image put on the decal.

Just based on my own experience as a lifelong DIY-er (do-it-yourself-er), I think I would try cutting some long skinny triangles out of the decal. Undoubtedly there will be a good deal of trial and error, because it would be really hard to figure out the exact sizes of the long skinny triangles with math. I wish I could draw some illustrations, but I'm afraid it would be beyond my Inkscape skills.....well ok, maybe I'll try. I'll be back shortly :D

Thanks for the welcome and your reply. I had thought about cutting out some triangles, similar to what I do when sewing around a curve, so I will put some thought into that and see what I come up with. All this for my four year old grandson, who wouldn't even notice that it was wrinkled

Oh ok, since you know sewing, it would be the equivalent of making darts. Except you don't stitch the edges, you would just try to slide them together before the decal starts to get too sticky.
