I haven't been able to find the answers to these questions, so hopefully someone here can help me out.

Is it possible to rename gradients made in Inkscape? The answer appears to be no unfortunately, but maybe someone can suggest something I may have overlooked.

Is it possible to save a gradient made in Inkscape so that it can be loaded into another file and reused on other projects? Or alternatively, can one make a gradient in GIMP, save it, and somehow import it into your Inkscape file? Again the answer seems to be no, but I thought I'd check here anyway.

1) Theres no nice UI, but you can do it in the XML editor if you wish, the ID is whats shown in the dialog, just dont include spaces.

2) We can load gimp .ggr files, I think we can save them too, I've never really tried.

2) Woohoo! Thanks for the tip. I don't see how to save .ggr files from Inkscape, but I do see how to import them now. At least I can make custom gradients in GIMP and keep an import-able library of ones I want to reuse. I wonder why, when you import a .ggr, Inkscape changes it's name to "linearGradient####" rather than just keeping it's saved name. I guess that'll just encourage me to check out that XML editing more.

In terms of a library, I'd create a single svg with lots of rectangles with gradients applied. you can copy the rect you want and then paste the style into the doc you want it in.

I do that single file library method with Blender. So far when I've tried importing things from other svg files, it just seems to bring in the whole file, and then I have to go through an delete all the bits that I didn't want and keep the bits I did. In Blender you can enter the file and select out the bits you want. Sounds like you're saying you can do the same thing with Inkscape. I'll have to do some reading and figure that out. Too bad you can't rename gradients in the gradient editing dialog.

Dont import the file, open it in a second window (use file>open in your first file) then just copy the shape with the gradient from the first window and paste it into the second...
