Hey all,
I am making quite a very complex path and that cause inkscape to go very very very slow. But from the point I make it I want to just use it as background for other stuff and so I don't need inkscape to remember anything about the path. I want to treat it as a simple object and don't care about being able to break the path apart. How can I do this to a path? Combine still does not do the job since it allows me the option of breaking it apart. The only thing I can think of is to export it as bitmap and then re-import it and use it like that.
Is there any smarter way to do such a thing?
Very Complex path makes inkscape hung
Re: Very Complex path makes inkscape hung
You could put it in its own layer, then make that layer invisible.
As you suggest, you could use your trick of re-importing it as a bitmap for use as a guide, and use the real one when you're done (again, in its own layer). Otherwise, five minutes after you throw something away, you decide you need to tweak it some more...

Have you tried disabling the snapping? That might help in making Inkscape more responsive.

I have a similar problem, I am relatively new to Inkscape. I have switched from Gimp for my current project as I could not work very large images as the bitmaps were huge, I thought SVG's would make my dreams of scale possible.
However I am working on an Image roughly 700mm tall x 150mm wide. It is composed of paths, which I am applying text to using generate from path>pattern along path. Problem is the file size is getting huge, I expect it to run into many hundreds of megabytes before I'm done, thus Inkscape is moving very very very slowly.
Am I using the best method to put the text along the path?
Also, I wonder if there is some way of reducing the file size, by discarding some of the information I don't need. I will try what has been suggested in this thread and I will try the simplify tool. Does anyone else have any other clever ideas?
I really don't need all those nodes - I'm not bothered about editing the paths any more. Can I convert all the paths to objects then just change them back to paths in order to put the text on them, then delete the original path and convert the text to an object perhaps???
kind regards
