I have Inkscape 0.91 with Win 7 Home Premium.
Here's what I want to do. Draw a rough path round an image, use Object > Clip > Set to remove the background. Then further refine the path.
Here's what I did:
- Using Bezier tool, draw a rough, closed path round the required image.
- Node diamonds are visible, and a rectangular box is round the required image.
- Add Layer 2. Move selection to Layer 2. Lock Layer 1.
- Add background to selection
- Object > Clip > Set
- Background disappears. Required image remains.
- Node diamonds are not visible (even although node editor is selected)
I've clicked everywhere, but I can't activate the nodes.
On a previous attempt, I was able to refine the path by showing the diamonds and dragging the nodes, but I can't remember how I showed the diamonds. It's much easier to further refine the path if the confusing original background is no longer visible - leaving a white background round the required image.
So my question is: with the background hidden, how do I now show the diamonds?

There is an icon at the tool options at the top to display clipping path handles that you need to toggle, "Show clipping path(s) of selected object(s)".
If you want something different, like having the clipped area "framed" with a stroked path, you could try cloning.
