Hi,
I know that variations of this have been dealt with on a number of occasions, but searching around I couldn't find a good solution. I'm *slowly* drilling it into myself that layers are groups, and that I can't group things form multiple layers together without losing all my layers.... but it does leave me with a puzzle. The main reason why I usually want to do this is to be able to grab a whole bunch of stuff and line one edge of it up with the grid. Now I can just select everything and move it but that doesn't really do what I want, because every bounding box in the group manically tries to snap to the nearest grid line, when all I actually want is the outermost ones to do so (thus the temptation to hit "group"!) Is there a way round this? I know that there is an option in the align/distribute dialog for dealing with this, but that doesn't really help when I'm trying to align with the grid as far as I can see....
Cheers,
Lucian

I may not completely understand the problem. You want a multiple selection (across multiple layers) to snap to a grid line or guide, but only the outer most object will actually be snapping?
It would reduce the chaos of everything trying to snap to every grid line or intersection, if you used 1 single guide, rather than a grid. I don't usually use bounding box snapping, except on rare occassions when there's no other choice, partly for this very reason. You could align the guide to the grid, and then disable the grid, to accomplish the snap.

Re: Align big set of objects from multiple layers with grid
Hi Brynn,
That's right. I have a whole set of stuff that I drew without paying enough attention to grid alignment. There's a big square background fill against which everything else is drawn, and I want that to line up neatly with the grid so that I can place a bunch of other stuff neatly around it/over it etc. Your suggestion seems like a good one. I do occasionally use guides when I get stuck with the grid; I guess I need to use them more!
Thanks!
Lucian
