[Solved] How to create a gradient between two images?
[Solved] How to create a gradient between two images?
Hello,
first of all: Sorry, that i ask this - i guess - newbe question, but i could not find the right english terms to solve my problem via google and often ended with a tutorial for gimp O.o
I have two images and would like to join them smoothly on the bottom, respectively the upper edge. Any help or tutorial would be great.
Thanks a lot,
Aquaplant

Re: How to create a gradient between two images?
Could you link to an example sketch of what you want to do?
Have a nice day.
I'm using Inkscape 0.92.2 (5c3e80d, 2017-08-06), 64 bit win8.1
The Inkscape manual has lots of helpful info! http://tavmjong.free.fr/INKSCAPE/MANUAL/html/

Re: How to create a gradient between two images?
Hello there,
are those two raster images?
If so, you could use a raster editor -like gimp- with better luck.
(Theoretically it is possible to do with inkscape, but saving it as a pdf may not work.)

Re: How to create a gradient between two images?
We're going to need some more info. Could you show us an example of what you want to do?
Aligning 2 images, top to bottom, should be fairly easy. But it's the word "gradient" in your title that's confusing me. In Inscape, a gradient is a smooth transition of colors, and can't exist all by itself. It has to have something to contain it.
Also, please tell us what kind of images these are. Are they photos or drawings? Raster or vector? http://tavmjong.free.fr/INKSCAPE/MANUAL ... phics.html
Oh gosh, 3 replies within a couple of minutes!

Re: How to create a gradient between two images?
Thanks for your reply so far.
I uploaded two example images (low quality). The upper edge of image 2 should gradually pass on to the bottom edge of image 1. => Do not want to have a sharp edge between those two images.
Raster images - the image files are in RAW and/or JPG, i think this should be fine with this definition(?)

Re: How to create a gradient between two images?
This one was made with gimp.
Masking is used to blend a top image to the one below, and the gap was filled with one line of pixels of each of the images.
Is that really what you want to achieve?

Re: How to create a gradient between two images?
I think you could do that with a mask, but I'm positive. Someone else may answer first, but I'll start a test, and let you know, if no one else comes around with the answer before I finish.
See, before I even finish typing!

I rekon the OP wants a soft blend from one to the other....

Re: How to create a gradient between two images?
I couldn't get it to work. Lazur's got a lot of tricks up his sleeve though, so maybe he has an idea. But you may need to use a raster editor for this.

Re: How to create a gradient between two images?
Was made by raster editing since the pdf-s cannot be saved with gradient masking usually. Might be possible by using a raster image as the masking object instead of a gradiented rectangle, which isn't a nice solution either.
But in my humble opinion it just doesn't look smooth if it is used to fill a gap in between.
Would look better if those two overlap without the "wrap around".
Edit: attached an svg with the same result.

Re: How to create a gradient between two images?
Hey Lazur, thanks for your effort. This is not exactly what i wanted. It should be more like a change over.
I managed to create something similiar to what i imagine, but goes along with a blurr-effect (did not use Inkscape for this). The overlapping area should be a bit bigger.

Re: How to create a gradient between two images?
Howdy,
It seem the goal is to make a soft transition from one to another, to create a composite raster image. This is easily done in GIMP, using a feathered mask or soft edge eraser on the foreground layer.

Re: How to create a gradient between two images?
You just need to draw a masking object and set it.
masking
Attached another one, with a possible solution to such masking you described.

Re: How to create a gradient between two images?
Thanks to everyone and thanks a lot to Lazur, that's exactly what i had in mind
The examples were really helpful.
Now my final question - 'cause i do not get it - how do i create my own linear gradient from white (and not transparent) to black? (With the 'normal' gradient the whole image just becomes white after masking).
[EDIT] Nevermind, i just dragged the rectangle larger than the image and it worked fine
Thank you very much to everbody!

Re: [Solved] How to create a gradient between two images?
I know that it's a bit late but I'm sure that Gimp is able to do this ( made with my old Photoshop 7 from 1999 ) - using a layer mask and a soft brush with low opacity and correct the saturation/darkness of the water. ( and it could have been done seem less with a bit more effort ). But that was not what you wanted to do, I see

Re: [Solved] How to create a gradient between two images?
The nice thing about Gimp is that the layer mask can be edited independent of the image itself, so it's fairly easy to get results like this. (short time is spend on this)
