Does anyone know how to make guilloche borders in inkscape?

Re: How to make guilloche borders?
i made mine from this thread:
viewtopic.php?f=8&t=17491
with tiled clones (rotated circles and polygon shapes), but the examples you posted are a lot more complex
you could also try the spirograph extension

Re: How to make guilloche borders?
Thanks friend, but does anyone have any other way to make guilloce borders in inkscape?
Re: How to make guilloche borders?
These images are very detailed, mostly to avoid copying and making fake documents, similar to decorations used as security printing on currency.
I can only think of the parametric curve extension to start off as these patterns seem to be the combination of some sin and cos functions,
but making such results by only using it is a bit beyond me.
For example:

wikipedia wrote:Geometric lathe work
A guilloché is an ornamental pattern formed of two or more curved bands that interlace to repeat a circular design. They are made with a geometric lathe.

A geometric lathe was used for making ornamental patterns on the plates used in printing bank notes and postage stamps. It is sometimes called a guilloché lathe. It was developed early in the nineteenth century when efforts were introduced to combat forgery, and is an adaptation of an ornamental turning lathe. The lathe was able to generate intersecting and interlacing patterns of fine lines in various shapes, which were almost impossible to forge by hand-engraving. They were used by many national mints.

Hi.
Looking at the numerous guilloche borders designs for sale (Vectorstock etc) you should think it is relatively easy to make.
Looking for the maths to create these borders I found most was made by a derivative of the spirograph function.
Creating a new extension based on the existing spirograph extension should be possible.
Use of the function plotter is another possibility, by adapting the code and formula found here;
http://www.techques.com/question/31-46507/Recreating-a-guilloche-with-TikZ
for use in the inkscape extension 'Render - Function plotter' I created
this;

My converted 'formula';
(4+sin(5*(x)))+((7+sin(7*(x)))-(4+sin(5*(x))))*(1+sin(5*(x)+0*20))/2
I made 20 different curves and changed the term 0*20 in the formula to 1*20, 2*20 and so on for each curve.

(Click image to enlarge.)
If you make a rounded corner box, converted to path and had every curve as a path along path you might get a decent border?
Good Luck.

Re: How to make guilloche borders?
Hi.
Just tested the path along path idea, with some 'refinement' to get the border start&stop to meet it would work.
(Edit; To 'refine' just use 'repeated and stretched'!! I used 'repeated' only in the example - doh!)

By combining several border plot it might be possible to make a decent border?

Re: How to make guilloche borders?
Well then the hatching lpe can generate some basic solution too.
Re: How to make guilloche borders?
Hi.
Lazur, I am not having the required knowledge on the Hatching - Live Path Effect to enable me to make a guilloche border.
Can you enlighten me please?

Re: How to make guilloche borders?
Hi.
Thank's, but I can't get it smarter than that function plot you posted above.
And couldn't get my idea work all the way through the hatching lpe, though edited it so now it may be suitable for monopoly money.
Used the xml editor to add precise directions to the path effects as the handles are a bit buggy.
Had to add the lpe to each duplicant one by one, because by duplicating the objects the lpe doesn't get duplicated.
(Which behaviour is very handy in any other case.)
Edit:
just found this.

Re: How to make guilloche borders?
Hi
Clever!
This reminds me of hatching for plotting on eggs using the EGGBOT.
In the eggbot extensions for Inkscape there are a 'preset hatches' function which is quite useful.
Example of use;
Have fun.

Re: How to make guilloche borders?
Thanks for the help guys. Anyone else have any idea how these guilloche borders are made?
