[solved] (HELP) Eraser tool not working!

Postby JeremyLabda » Sun Apr 24, 2016 3:04 pm

So I've looked through the forums for solutions, but I couldn't find any. I've even tried uninstalling Inkscape and reinstalling it many times! For some reason, I am not able to erase anything in this drawing at all. :tool_eraser:

Do open my attachment and see if you're able to erase anything. Also, please help me fix this. I reaaallly want to finish this drawing.

Weird.

As a workaround you can select all, and copy-paste to a new document, that way it works.

It works here pasted in a new document. Though there is nothing seems fancy with the original file preventing it to work.
No locked layers, no locked objects, no clones, no patterns.

After more testing it seems working on some of the paths in the original file as well if the page is resized.

SO removing all the transformations helps it.
Select all, cut (Ctrl+X)
create a new layer and paste in position (Ctrl+Alt+V) -assuming the transformations are set optimized in the settings.

In my opinion, the Eraser tool isn't worth using. Besides the fact that it often doesn't work (for me and also many other messages like this) it's more of a paint or raster tool that is wedged into a vector program. For what functionality it contains, I honestly find little to no use for it in my day to day use of Inkscape.

For a vector program like Inkscape, I choose to use vector tools, such as editing or deleting paths or nodes. Or maybe some path operations (booleans).

Can you tell us the specific part of your drawing that you want to erase? Then we can teach you how to handle it in a vector way :D

Seems to work here after pasting to a new layer and deleteing the original layer.

Workflow:
    Clean document (34 defs removed)
    Add new layer
Select all in original layer and cut
    Paste in new layer
    Delete original layer
Clean document again (63 defs removed)
FWIW, the eraser tool generally works fine for me, although I don't use it much.

Have a nice day.

I'm using Inkscape 0.92.2 (5c3e80d, 2017-08-06), 64 bit win8.1

The Inkscape manual has lots of helpful info! http://tavmjong.free.fr/INKSCAPE/MANUAL/html/

Thank you all for your help! I finally got it working with @tylerdurden's method.
