Hello,
I want to place a diagonal striped pattern over my object but I have no idea how to do this. I think I have to use the option objects to Pattern but I did not come further than that. I hope someone can help me with my problem.

If the type of pattern you want to use is available already (in the Fill/Stroke dialog > Fill tab > Pattern Fill you can browse through the available patterns) you won't have to use Object to Pattern.

You can find instructions for using the Pattern Fill in the Inkscape Manual, found in the Help menu.
