Stretching by aligning

Postby daviddoria » Sat Oct 30, 2010 12:01 pm

Is there a way to stretch an object by aligning it with two other objects that it can't reach at the same time? Say I have a little rectangle inside of a big rectangle. If I align the left sides, the little rectangle moves to the left of the big rectangle. If I then align their right sides, the little rectangle moves to the right side of the big rectangle. Is there a way to say "Stay on the left side, but stretch yourself to align your right sides, too!"?

Thanks,

David

Not that I'm aware of, however I'm quite new to Inkscape myself :). I can think of two other methods to accomplish your description.

1.) Give the second object (small rectangle) the same width as the first object (large rectangle) using the box in the top of Inkscape (with the W in front of it). Then align the left- or right sides.

2.) Align the small rectangle to the left side of the large rectangle. Then, in the menu on the right, enable "Snap nodes or handles" and "Snap to paths". When you now resize your box in the x-direction, the right side should align with the right side of the large rectangle when close enough.

There's no magic way to achieve what you want. You could use Ailurus' method, or use the selector tool to stretch it. If you use snapping then you will get a perfect fit.

Cool, snapping will do the trick, thanks!
