This is an Inkscape forum, not AI forum, you can only find AI topics that are somehow related to Inkscape.

Perhaps you were recommended to use Inkscape application instead of AI?

There are many similarities and many differences. You can start learning about Inkscape at http://inkscape.org/index.php. You'll have to go to Adobe website to learn about Illustrator. One very important difference, which often causes users to choose Inkscape over AI, is that Inkscape is an open source project, meaning that it's free. And also meaning that if you know programming and coding you can contribute to Inkscape's development. While you have no say over AI's development, it's also very expensive!

If you have a specific goal in mind for your use of Inkscape, you should thoroughly research both programs. One may do what you want and the other may not. If you're just a hobbyist, I would suggest Inkscape. I first installed 4 or so years ago, and still have much to learn!
