SVG & missing parts

Postby Toci » Mon Oct 20, 2008 3:12 am

Hello, I'm trying to modify some svg Human icons and for some reason sometimes when I make changes some areas disappear.
I saw a similar problem being mentioned here before but in my case the most strange part is that sometimes they do save properly; I just got Inkscape two days ago so I don't know if I clicked something and that's why I'm getting mixed results.
Here's what's happening ( The one on the right was successfully modified):

Any help would be appreciated.

what did you do? what was the last action you did before it disappeared? Maybe you simply deleted the objects or removed their fill and stroke.

Okay so I was modifying the icons and Inkscape showed the process fine, the preview looked okay too but when I checked the folder where I was saving them about half of them were like that (incomplete) and the oldest ones remained okay.
I copied the originals again and all the new icons kept appearing incomplete as soon as I did something to them, even if I only changed the colour of a single line whole areas go missing in the final product (after I click "save" and close Inkscape) and if I restore it to their original colour they reappear.

I assume when you open them again in Inkscape they look ok? I also assume your screenshot is of a linux file manager which is rendering the SVG.

It's possible there is a bug with your file managers ability to render the SVG (not with Inkscape). Try saving your SVG as "Plain SVG" and see if the file manager can render it properly then.

Thanks for the reply microUgly.

I did what you said and yes when I use Inkscape again it looks fine. The screenshot was indeed of the file manager but I just used another file manager, GIMP and F-Spot Photo Manager and got the same results (parts missing).
I tried saving as "Plan SVG" and "Compressed Plain SVG" (just to make sure) but there weren't any changes.

I'm thinking about reinstalling, if I clicked something somewhere perhaps that would fix it.

Can you post the file online? If you don't have a host you can use mediafire.com.

Right, I uploaded it here:

And, I did unistall, deleted the program folders, then reinstalled but the problem remains.

I didn't find a solution but I managed to make the files work.
All I did was re-save them with Adobe Illustrator after editing them with Inkscape.

Thought I would share in case another person has this problem.

I had written a reply to this but I think I must not have posted it because I was going to test how Batik Rasterizer rendered the image. I still haven't done it, but I found that Opera and FF display the file ok, but can see that GIMP does not.

Your original screenshot shows one icon working and the other not. Are you able to find the difference between the two to isolate the cause? Are you able to upload a version of the SVG that does work (not the one passed through AI).

Thanks again for the reply microUgly.

I really don't know what Bastik Rasterizer is but I can try to install it and see if that works.

As for seeing the differences in the icons I did open the files with a text editor to see if I could spot where the problem was but both files looked incredibly different and since I'm new to this I didn't know where to look for an error.

I think I found one of the Inkscape-saved files that did work, I uploaded it here: http://www.mediafire.com/?em5qiixi4jc

Batik Rasterizer is a command-line utility for converting SVG to PNGs. I tend to use it as a way to check that file is ok. If Batik doesn't render the image properly then there might something wrong or invalid in the SVG code.

Yeah, they are a lot more differences than I expected. I'm not sure what to do with the version of the file that does work to produce the excess SVG in the file that doesn't work.

It's possible that Inkscape is generating invalid code or it could be that GIMP (and your file manager) is at fault. I couldn't say which it is. You could raise the issue with the Inkscape developers on the mailing list to see what they think.

I appreciate the info on Bastik Rasterizer, sounds like something I should definitely get.

I forgot to mention that the error with those Inkscape files happened too with the Windows version which I also downloaded, but I think I'll be asking where you suggested just in case it's a bug.
Thanks for your time microUgly.
