storage issues
Hi, I'm new to Inkscape and I'm suddenly having issues with storage on my computer that seem to come from my use of Inkscape. I am a novice with computer issues and am wondering if its because of something I did wrong either in installing or using the program. I'm using Inkscape to create a large, highly detailed map. I'm clearing 3-4 GB a day by deleting music or movies, but every day my hard drive is full and the only program I'm running is Inkscape. Is this a common problem? Could it have anything to do with Inkscape? Any suggestions would be great
Re: storage issues
Hi colemandow,
you should probably try to find out which files are taking up that space first to be able to judge where they come from. Maybe do a search by date on your harddrive? Or use some nice harddisk file visualization tool like Filelight (for Linux) or other disk usage analyzer tools for your operating system.
AFAIK, Inkscape only saves what you tell it to save, autosave must be activated deliberately (this would save copies of your map). You can check if autosave is active and where those files would be if it is active, in your preferences:
Edit -> Preferences -> Input/Output -> Autosave.

Something doesn't work? - Keeping an eye on the status bar can save you a lot of time!

Re: storage issues
Often this kind of problem indicates a security issue. Not as common these days. But still possible, if you've just never learned about internet security. Do you use good anti-virus and anti-malware programs which are regularly updated? Have you done a scan recently?
Maybe if you have auto-save turned on, as Moini mentioned, and the file you're working on is really huge. I've never used auto-save, so I'm not sure how it works. But let's say you have an image that's 50 MB. (I couldn't even open such a file on my system....or if it did open, it would probably take 5 or 10 minutes to open.) If it auto-saves every 5 minutes, and you work on the file for 2 hours....does that mean that 50 MB file is saved 24 times, and getting larger each time? That would be at least 1200 MB, which is approx 1.17 GB. If that's how it works, I guess that might be possible.
No, it's not a commone problem. This is the first time I've ever heard this kind of complaint.

Even if Inkscape is the only program you use, it doesn't mean that's the only program adding to the hard drive. For example, as I mentioned security programs -- maybe you have them configured to get updates every day, or if you're on Windows, you might be getting updates automatically. Your computer is doing all kinds of things in the background, even if you just have 1 program open.

Re: storage issues
So it is a large file (60 mb). As far as I can tell its not auto saving but I don't know. I'm not really sure at this point. Thanks for your help
