new at this! how to save image as a vector to drag and drop?

Postby worm78 » Mon Oct 17, 2011 7:19 am

i am new to graphic design and using programs like inkscape! I have made a design to add to my website whitch is a drag and drop type format. I need to know how to save my image to be uploaded on my web page and be able to resize it on the pages but not lose pixelation when using it in my header. When saving as a png file when I make it larger it still looks pixalated just like a jpeg? I thought that was the whole idea of a vector file for it to look better when adjusting the size or am I wrong?

Welcome to InkscapeForum!

I have made a design to add to my website whitch is a drag and drop type format.

I don't understand. Do you mean that visitors to the website can drag and drop images onto or off of the website?

It is true that vector format images can be resized without distorting or blurring the image. But PNG is a raster format (just like JPG), and therefore susceptible to pixelation if it's resized. You could avoid that by using SVG formatted images on the website. However, not all browsers can display them, and to my knowledge, none can display all SVGs. But many browsers can display most SVGs. Going forward, since IE has begun to display SVG (with IE9), I think we will begin to see more SVG images on the internet. But at the moment, most internet images are in a raster format, because most webmasters and website owners want everyone to see their images, no matter which browser they use.

As far as a header on a website, there are certain ways to code the page, so that raster images don't have to be stretched to fit the page. I couldn't tell you exactly how to do that though. I would suggest finding a good website with a forum, and tutorials about how to do it.

But the bottom line is that you'll have to choose between finding a way to code the page so that raster images display properly, or use SVG (or other vector format) knowing that many people won't be able to see them.

I guess I might infer from your message that this "drag and drop" format must cause the dragged and dropped raster images to stretch to fit a frame, or something? Or is it just the header where you're having trouble?
