Inkscape version 0.92

Postby brynn » Thu Oct 20, 2016 3:06 am

Hi Friends,
I just saw the announcement for 0.92pre2(beta):

https://inkscape.org/en/download/source/

I haven't heard any definite word yet, but I think we might be skipping the About screen contest this time. I'll try to find out more.

Yes, Martin is working on it. It was discussed in the mailing list that he would take the task over from Josh.

Because of the last minute addition of the new gradient mesh tool (as a test) which is available in 0.92pre3 (see links above), there's been another pre-release to fix some bugs that were found.

0.92pre4 can be found here, temporarily https://launchpad.net/inkscape/0.92.x/0.92pre4 (There seems to be some problems with the site, and it couldn't be uploaded there. The site was actually offline for a while due to problems with the host, on Saturday. But I expect they'll be fixed very quickly.) I'll post the permanent link on the site, as soon as it's available.

It sounds like the gradient mesh tool is definitely going to be released in the stable 0.92!! Image

^-- link directs to the source uncompiled.

Although there are alot of new features, some from 0.91 got worse. (For example.)
And with the mesh tool there are problems as well:
-draw a rectangle, add a mesh fill, resize by the bounding box handles, copy/paste rectangle ---> resulting object's mesh is messed up in scale
-clone an object with a mesh fill, edit the mesh in the parent ---> instant crash
-bend lpe doesn't bend mesh fill

Lazur, are all of these reported? (esp. the crash?)

Thank you! Hope the crash will be fixed for the release. I assume the bending will probably be very hard to do...

Didn't look at them yet, but just wanted to say thanks for testing the feature! Do you happen to have a cool picture / screenshot of a mesh object you built?

Off topic:
Trying to get the basic grasp of it. Working on a trophy. Had reached 2000 uploads at openclipart so it would be the newest in the cabinet.

Made this earlier:

Edit:
recent one:

With all the mentioned bugs I "rushed" it. Takes too long and hard to handle.
Also points out the conceptual problem of gradients linear colour interpolation. When trying to make a fade from a highlight to a shadow, the middle step will be way less saturated than necessary.
And for that step you would need adding an extra node (and set each node colour one by one...)
So generally it may be better to create a gradient map first for the target colours and apply it on the mesh so then you can go simple by setting mesh nodes greyscale.

Nice drawings! I've been working on one too. But as I usually do, I started with an overly ambitious drawing. Hopefully can finish within a week. But I'm sure there will be more from others users, before that. In the other topic, I showed just a rough example. You're welcome to use it, temporarily, until some better examples are posted.

I'll add a link to this page to the announcement preparation page on the Wiki (http://wiki.inkscape.org/wiki/index.php ... g092#Tasks). Any licencing wishes, Lazur? I know you usually use CC0 - is that fine? I'd still like to see your name/nick name mentioned, though.

Brynn, I'm not sure I know where to look for the picture - can you add a link?

Those weren't that good.

Here, be more up to date:

-bit larger raster version here,
svg source here.

Off topic:
Prefer to keep it in a non-commercial licence.
On the public domain image usage giving credit to the author may not be necessary, but it does prevent anyone claiming copyright ownership on it >>> it cannot be stolen, and
because you may need to prove it is public domain you need to give credit who raised it into public domain >>> author will get credit anyway.

Although to be honest using CC0 mostly because that's openclipart's default policy and they are the best svg host I could find.
At my deviantart page I just upload images with the default (c) licence.

Hi Troops,

I want to test the new features, but it's not spelled out (anywhere I can find), how to run the dev versions on Windows side-by-side with the current version.

In particular, I would like to ensure preference and config files are not shared/conflicting between the current version and the dev version(s).

Thanks,
TD
Have a nice day.

I'm using Inkscape 0.92.2 (5c3e80d, 2017-08-06), 64 bit win8.1

The Inkscape manual has lots of helpful info! http://tavmjong.free.fr/INKSCAPE/MANUAL/html/

I don't think that not sharing the prefs file is possible. You can make a backup, though, or use the other Inkscape as a different user, so that user has got his own preferences file.
As for the 'running in parallel', you can use the 'binary archive' version. Just unpack it and double-click to use, whereever you put it.

I think I read on the mailing list that they're hoping to release 0.92 stable in a few days. No promises, but that's what I read this morning.

The new pre point release, 0.92.2pre0, is available, and developers are asking Windows users in particular, to test.

source package: https://inkscape.org/en/gallery/=inksca ... /0922pre0/

Windows packages: https://inkscape.org/en/~eduard.braun/g ... e-0922pre/

Here's a quote from the message to the mailing list:

Bryce just released the source tarball for the 0.92.2 pre-release (see
above), the final release is to be expected around Aug 7th.

I want to invite you all to test the pre-release. Especially the builds
for Windows should receive some extensive testing as I switched the
build system for this release (it's now built with MSYS2 instead of our
custom-built devlibs for those interested in the details).

Overall this should result in less bugs, some additional features and
maybe even slightly improved performance, but - as with all fundamental
changes - it might have introduced regressions we're not aware of.
Therefire please let me know if you find any new issues that might block
this release (we'll fall back to the way we built Inkscape before in
this case).

A full set of Windows builds (7z, exe, msi - x86/x64) is available from:
https://inkscape.org/en/~eduard.braun/g ... e-0922pre/
