Hi everybody,
I am a french user of inkscape, and i work on macosX, winXP and a few on linux.
I am not sure but it seems that inkscape can be installed on a remote web server, mine is a gentoo linux kernel 2.6.27.10-grs (OVH release 2). I just want to be able to use the inkscape --export-... command lines on my webserver, cause it is the better svg to pdf (print quality) converter i found.
Isn't it ?
I am trying :
emerge inkscape (wouhou !... oho...)
it needs a lot of other things, emerge, emerge, or install from tar.gz, and all seems ok now, except for a package :
No package 'giomm-2.4' found
i don't found it with emerge, i found many occurences of the files contents of 'giomm-2.4', and, reading, i understood it is a part of glibmm-2.15 and of newer versions of glibmm (if i understood) here :
http://www.murrayc.com/blog/permalink/2 ... -gio-in-c/
But my glibmm is : (emerge --search glibmm )
Latest version available: 2.14.2
Latest version installed: 2.14.2
oho...
On this web server, i have apache 2, php, mysql running for my clients, i am a little afraid to modify its config. Before trying to install inkscape, i had verified if i can, and how install inkscape on my web server in guides and forums.
I don't know a lot of things about linux, and about webservers... i know a little.
So can you tell me if what i try is possible, or if not, if you know another (free) way to convert svg to pdf (with embedded free fonts) on my webserver ?
Thanks a lot
is it possible to install inkscape on my remote web server
-> trying to install inkscape on my remote web server
oho... no answers...
I found this : http://wiki.inkscape.org/wiki/index.php/CompilingGentoo
I have try to do what is described in to install the subversion of inkscape 0.44, but it doesn't work :
I had this problem 3 days ago, but after many manipulations and the emergements of depedencies listed after the ./configure of 0.46 version via a tar.gz file, this had finished to happen.
So my problem is entire.. If you don't know a way to a solution, perhaps do you know someone who could know ??
please please please,
thanks, thanks, thanks
David

A Linux forum might be able to offer advise. In theory I think it should work, but my experience is limited with Linux.
Re: is it possible to install inkscape on my remote web server
Yes, of course, i 'm going to post about it in a gentoo forum
Since i have read a lot of web pages about...
And about this question, can you help me ? :
Need I really "giomm-2.4" to use only inkscape command lines, and is it possible to install inkscape without it ??
Thanks a lot,
David

Re: is it possible to install inkscape on my remote web server
You could always try using a distribution that has pre-built packages with Inkscape. I've had no troubles installing it on Debian or Ubuntu servers, calling it from CGI scripts. It does require a large set of dependencies (gnome, xfree, etc., but it works well enough).
Re: is it possible to install inkscape on my remote web server
Hi Madmaxx,
If i understand, you tell me that i can try to change my gentoo linux for an other linux...
Isn't it too dangerous for me, and too long ? (it is on my working webserver)
Perhaps i need just to upgrade my gentoo... I am not sure, i am reading.
And you say that you have installed inkscape on remote web servers and that it works ?
it is a confirmation for me that it is really possible.
My problem is entire, but i understand more things
Thanks,
