Hi there,
I'm fairly new to the Inkscape world but have wasted literally hours today trying to figure out what I'm doing wrong that I can't get the result I'm looking for. I'm creating a logo that requires two opposing 'curves' and was using the advice given here: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=UjmER3xMC0o to create the effect I need. Unfortunately, every time I try to use the pen tool, I get one of these:



Help? My process has been:
draw square, object>path, manually rotate 90°, select top and bottom nodes, auto smooth nodes, then copy object.
set spiro with 48-50% smoothing and shape from clipboard. Then draw.

In case it makes any difference, I'm working on a Mac via XQuartz 2.7.8.

Instead of this you can try the Spiro with Form directly with the
Just hit "B" and select Spiro and Ellipse as Form. then click and drag and watch the path - To complete the curve hit "enter" or click with right mouse button:

Judging from the screenshot OP has posted, its seems there is no pattern along the path applied, although hes got the steps right....
