Could not connect to the open clipart library

Postby unofornaio » Sun Nov 22, 2015 7:10 am

Hi all I am a new user for private use home/ business related artwork items. I have searched on this site and google and was unable to find an answer to my question.
I have found questions close but they were for an earlier version.
I recently downloaded this version:0.91 (r13725) I added the "r" number because it was in the upper right had corner of the about page and did not know if it was significant or not.
I am running it on windows XP pro version 2002 service pack 2

I read how to set up preferences and did so under the clip art category
the address is showing openclipart.org followed by my username and password I obtained when registering on the site.

when I got to file-import clipart the box comes up and before typing anything in the lower left corner it has a red icon followed by "could not connect to the open clipart library"

Among the posts I came across while searching it appears there were issues with windows platform in previous versions could anyone tell me if these have been resolved or if Im just not doing something correctly and instruct me of point me in a direction.

I have created some items and have not had the chance to fully explore the program but I am certainly grateful for it.

Thank you for help
J
Although I did search extensively Im assuming this question has been asked many times I apologize ahead of time if I was just unable to fine the appropriate post.

Hhmm.... I know that feature did not work in previous versions. But I don't know if it's supposed to work in 0.91 or not.

Actually I'm not sure why it's a feature at all. Anyone can visit OCA and download images. What does this feature do? Does it download the image directly into Inkscape or something?

Thank you
It appears as if it was created to access the OCA right from the program and just search and download or add from there.
Is there even a way to save something created in Inkscape to a "library" so for example images I use often I can just access and add?

I'm not a programmer, but it seems like it should be do-able to me. Just need someone with the knowledge, skills, and motivation to do it.

I searched in the wiki and found a reference from version 0.43. Sounds like it might be an old feature that no longer works??? http://wiki.inkscape.org/wiki/index.php ... notes/0.43 about halfway down the page. (the first Inskcape version I ever used was 0.44))

Or maybe it works on some operating systems, but not on others??

I have to admit, I have always been curious about this feature, but have never known it to work (....at least not on Windows and v 0.44 to present)

Works in 0.91 on my Linux system. Search, click on import, and voilà - the image is in your drawing. Only problem is that it only shows the first 20 or so search results, and loading a preview takes a few seconds, so not too useful currently. If I need something from OCAL, I just go there using my web browser - it's faster and provides more overview.

Perhaps symbol libraries could be 'abused' for the library feature unofornaio asked about... Find instructions about how to create these in your /symbols folder (advanced usage, not a technique I'd recommend to someone completely unacquainted with XML).

The user name / password combo was only required for the now deactivated 'Export to OpenClipart' feature. I think it's currently without function.
