Joining nodes doesn't do what I want it to.

Postby Spruu » Mon Aug 15, 2011 5:50 pm

Hey, I'm fairly new at this and I've found a way to get the effect I want but it involves converting the object to path and I'd really like to find a way not to. Or if there's some way to return to the original object for further editing the spiro spline, etc.

Image

I start with the object on the left. I want to end up with the object on the right. Basically, I'd love to join the end node with the bottom most part of the inner circle. If I convert to path, and delete the inner series of nodes, I get exactly what I want, but like I said before, I'd like the option to change the spiro spline at this point to create more variatons of this object.

Is this possible? Thanks.

Welcome to InkscapeForum!

No, not that I know of, is there a way to convert a spiro spline to a path, and then back again (there are very few instances in Inkscape where you can convert something to a path, and then back to the original). But I CAN think of a way to achieve what you want. Actually I do this all the time! I love to play with the spiro splines. What I do, is once I have a spline that I want to keep, I simply Duplicate it. Then I can convert my original to a path, and do whatever I want. And I also have my duplicate, which is still a spiro spline, and I can continue tweaking it further.

Of course I do end up with bits and pieces of things that might later need to be assembled. But Inkscape's Snap functionality is very helpful with that part. Also Layers, if it's going to be a very large, complex image.

Will that work for you?

Thanks for the reply.

This is more or less what I am having to do, and I was hoping to find a way to make the second object something easier to work with and be the base for more. As is, it's going to require going in and manually deleting a lot of nodes after I've positioned my objects (this is just one example). I was really just hoping there would be a way to sort of double back on an object when drawing the spiro spline, join the end node to a node along the path, and fill the space they encompass as part of the object... if that makes sense.

In this particular example you could just draw a circle with the same fill color and drop it behind the spiro line ,,, i know it's not quite what you want but it's what I would do if i wanted to keep the spiro effect.
Your mind is what you think it is.

I think you may be right, that's probably the best way to go about this. I'll just get rid of the stroke and do that. I liked the outline, but I can just make a duplicate of the spiro underneath and use outset to define the outline again. So to sum up: more objects. Thanks. :)
