Completely uninstall inkscape?

Postby 0x0nium » Wed Dec 14, 2011 7:18 am

Hi everyone,

I installed version 0.48.2-1-SL on OSX.5.8 with X11 2.1.6

(I mixed up Leopard and SL DL links and didn't pay attention to the name of the dmg package)

The program and X11 crash on startup.

Here are my two questions :

What folders and files do i delete to fully remove the program? (will it make a difference if i leave them there?)
here's what i found on my drive :

What version would work?

thanks in advance :)

Inkscape 0.48.2 on Mac OS X 10.5.8 Leopard requires a newer version of X11 (i.e. Xquartz 2.5.1 or later).
For details please see

With Apple's X11 2.1.6 on Mac OS X 10.5.8 Leopard, the latest version to run is Inkscape 0.48.1
(download "Inkscape-0.48.1-1-LEOPARD+.dmg" from sf.net)

If you really want to give up on Inkscape:
  1. Move the application 'Inkscape' to Trash and empty it. This deletes the program itself completely: Inkscape does not install files outside of the application itself - the application is fully self-contained & relocatable (can be dropped into any folder and run from there).
  2. if you care about the configuration files left behind [1], you can delete these two folders:
    ~/.config/inkscape
    ~/.inkscape-etc
These two folders are only relevant for Inkscape (the first one stores the preferences file and custom user resources for Inkscape (like extensions, palettes, filters or keymap file), the second one contains configuration files for libraries which are bundled with Inkscape on Mac OS X). None of them does interfere with any other programs - there is no "risk" in leaving them there, nor do they consume a lot of disk space.

(I don't know what exactly you had searched for: '/tmp/skl' for example is created by 'GIMP on OS X', most of the other entries are either created by X11, or shared with other X11-based applications. The font cache files in '~/.fontconfig' for example are used by many applications running under X11 (they do not use Apple's font server).
I would not recommend to manually delete files/folders or sockets in the '/private/tmp' directory: those are managed by the applications that create them and deleted automatically when no longer needed or the next time you reboot. Note also that some entries there are from Mac OS X itself (e.g. everything with "launch").)

[1] It is completely normal that the application-specific configuration files stay behind. It's just that Inkscape.app does not yet store the preferences in the user's 'Library' folder (under 'Application Support' and/or 'Preferences') like native OS X applications (as well as GIMP on OS X) do.
