Help working with text

Postby netloco » Sun Mar 07, 2010 1:03 am

Hey Guys,

I just discovered Inkscape and I'm having trouble understanding how to work with text. I've looked for a tutorial but found nothing this simple but specific.

I want to design a logo but I need to be able to manipulate the text. Can I use nodes on letters? If so how? :?

Thanks!

Welcome to the forums, netloco!

The best advice I can probably give you, is to use the Text and Font dialog (Text menu), rather than the Text Tool control bar. The control bar doesn't work well for some reason (which I don't understand).

Yes, you can change the text into path (Path menu > Object to path). Here's the chapter on paths in the Inkscape manual, found in Help menu (or link in my signature):
http://tavmjong.free.fr/INKSCAPE/MANUAL/html/Paths.html

That manual is pretty easy to follow, but if you need something more simplified, try the Quick Guide to Inkscape, that's in my signature.

And here's the chapter on text in the manual:

Thank you for the welcome Brynn and thanks so much for the links to the manual page. I found the answer there!

For anyone else with this question, here's the answer;

1) select your object, which in this case is the text.
2) select "convert selected object to path" (hint: you only see this when you hover over the buttons) up in nodes control area - alternately you can hold down SHIFT + CTRL + C

and viola the text has nodes and can be modified!

please note that after converting to path the text object can be modified, but the text itself cannot be. That is to say that if you decide to change the spelling or add words or something later you will not be able to do so because the object is no longer "text" in the eyes of inkscape.
