Ello, thanks for all the info!

Hiya,

I've been reading for a couple of months trying to get to grips with inkscape. I'm hoping to start creating images for the online microstock companies, currently trying to get some application images together...as yet my work isn't that great but I'm trying!

Anyway thanks to the people who take time to post here because you've helped me overcome quite a few niggly problems :) merely selecting an item still causes me the most frustration but i'm getting better at organising my work to make it easier for myself......it would be great though to have all my objects in an easily selectable list form :) However I'm just grateful to be able to use inkscape for free so I shan't complain lol :)

Welcome to InkscapeForum!

Yes, such an object manager as you describe has been a much requested new feature. I don't know how soon we might expect to see it, but I think Inkscape will eventually have something like that. Meanwhile, there are a number of tricks we can use, to make selections easier. If you want to describe the situations that bother you, we can give you some tips :D

Thanks for the welcome brynn.

I'm managing to fumble my way to selecting the correct object but i'm sure there are easier ways lol. The situation which springs to mind is making a shadow of an object...my routine is to duplicate>fill black>blur>lower object>then try to reposition it. This is the point where my click and drag usually drags a completely different object doh! If i use the direction keys this adjusts my blur not the position of the object(I guess because that was my previous action). Its just a matter of doing things in a different order I think so I dont get myself into that situation...everyday I'm learning better ways of doing stuff with some trial and error. :)

thanks again!

You can use Alt + click to select objects that are hidden below others. Or even if you can see them, but it's hard to click in the tiny space where they are visible. Just click once above the object, then Alt + click as many times as you need to get down to the one you want. Then you'll be able to use the arrow keys to move it. Or in other situations, simply zooming in can help. Or another way, using the Tab key alone will select the first drawn objects, and continuing to tap the Tab key will cycle through all the objects, one by one (Shift + Tab goes backwards). Obviously that's not the best way, if it's a complex drawing. But still useful at times :D

Ahh thanks brynn, the tab key I did not know about so i'll surely be trying that, and i'm finding changing the view to 'outline' for a moment is really helpful in finding an object.

I'm picking up lots of tips from browsing the forum :D
