Need to do the simplest of things! (Vector track the boundary of an image)

Postby Achul » Mon Feb 01, 2016 9:30 pm

Hey guys.

So I'm trying SOMEHOW to add a 4 point vector border on my pixel image (a PNG) so as to be able to cut it into certain formations using the path tools such as "exclude" and "unite" and all of those.

But nothing I do works. I've tried creating a square using the point tool and then uniting them, nothing happens. I've tried pixel tracing but it crashed my program. I've tried bitmap tracing but it traces every single bit of color instead of just the border.

The purpose of this is to, well I'll explain it in the simplest form I can. I have a picture that's square. I want to put it inside of a circle (or actually a far, far more complicated formation). I want to do this by excluding anything of that square that isn't fitting inside the circle.

THANK YOU VERY MUCH FOR YOUR HELP! ASAP PLEASE. THANKS :-) Working on a deadline... :P

Edit: It's not working. The picture just converts into the shape instead of being cut into the shape.... Still need help.

edit2 I moved the layers (flipped them) and now it works! Fantastic

A simple clip operation might do also.
Have a nice day.

I'm using Inkscape 0.92.2 (5c3e80d, 2017-08-06), 64 bit win8.1

The Inkscape manual has lots of helpful info! http://tavmjong.free.fr/INKSCAPE/MANUAL/html/

Draw a larger box around the image and the shape you want as the cut-out. Select both and combine with ctrl-K - now select underlying image too and go main menu->Object->Mask->set:
Image

Cheers
