Problem with Inkscape & SCAL

Postby SiJu » Mon Jun 11, 2012 5:33 pm

Hello Everyone,

I'm from Germany, so I'm sorry about my English.

I 've startet to use Inkscape & Scal for my cutting mashine. So I'm still an absolute beginner.
I've got a problem with my own design. I drawn on paper and then scanned with photoshop to bmp (I like it better, draw your own designs on paper). With Inkscape I' ve saved it as svg file. But when I open the file in SCAL, I can't see it. I only see an empty rectangle, but no motive. When I draw a design in Inksape, I can see it in SCAL. I think the problem has something to do with the scan. What am I doing wrong? I've tried it with the jpg format, but this was the same problem.

Can someone help me please?

Thanks in advance and sorry about my English.

love greetings Sindy

Welcome to InkscapeForum!

Saving a BMP as SVG doesn't automatically convert it to vector. If you draw it originally in Inkscape, it is automatically a vector image. But you can convert a BMP to vector, in Inkscape, using Path menu > Trace Bitmap. The Trace Bitmap dialog will have a small learning curve, but once you figure out what settings to use, it will work quite well. Here's the manual info: http://tavmjong.free.fr/INKSCAPE/MANUAL/html/Trace.html You'll probably want to use one of the Single Scan options.

Hello Brynn,

many many thanks for the link, I've found my error immediately. I was already on the right track but sometimes you can't see the wood for the trees. :-)

But the main thing is to know that it works! I'm so happy.
Thanks for you quick response.

Best wishes
Sindy

Depending of the drawing, you will get better results if you draw it with Inkscape using the :tool_pen: instead of tracing it automatically.

I use Inkscape 0.48 on Ubuntu 12.04.
English is not my natural language so excuse my mistakes.
