Resizing and font issues

Postby jeffdu63 » Sat Apr 27, 2013 3:23 am

Hi,

I'm a new user of Inkscape on Mac OS. I know a bit of Illustrator but I find it too heavy so I wanted to shift to something more...friendly. That's why I have tested Inkscape. It seems to work perfectly and fits with my need.
however I have few little issues I would like to fix.
1) I don't know why but I choose a font (I need Helvetica) and click Apply...nothing happens. The font "sans" (I assume it is "without" in english ;) ) remains. So total I cannot use other fonts....which is quite annoying.
2) for resizing....I don't at all how it works. Let's say I draw a rectangle and I change one dimension, automatically the others change also, including the stroke for the border. Is there a setting avoiding this?

I understand that those questions could appear simple, but it will really helpful for me if you could give some advices to fix my problems.

Since I'm French, I apologize in advance for my English. ;)
Thanks a lot for your help.

Welcome to InkscapeForum!

Hhmm, I think fonts are handled differently on Macs. And as Windows user, I don't understand how they work. But I do know that Inkscape requires the fonts to be installed. I think there is a way to use fonts on a Mac without actually installing them. But Inkscape requires them to be installed.

(No, Sans is still called Sans in English! Although I think you're correct about the translation.) (Sans used as a font name, I think refers to Sans Serif. I think it means "without serif" and serif, I think although not positive at all, is the kind of caps on the ends of a letters strokes. So like "I" in this forum, which uses a sans serif type of font, has no horizontal ends at the top and bottom. If you compare something like Arial (a sans serif font) to Times New Roman (which does have serifs) it easier to understand. Although I suspect one of our pros will have something to say about my informal description, lol.)

For your 2nd issue, I recently answered the same question. Let me find a link to that topic, and I'll brb :D

Thanks a lot for your reply. I think you are right , I need to install fonts on Mac too. I'm not in my office this weekend so I'll check this out on Monday. I'll let you know.
Thanks for these tips and for the little course about the font...now I know that "sans" is kept in any language.
Have a good weekend

OK, for the resizing problem. It's fixed. Thanks a lot
regarding, the fonts, there is still an issue. But I think it is a Mac problem
In fact, I would like to type with the Helvetica font. When I change for another font, it works;however with Helvetica it stays with "Sans". Apparently it is a matter of Mac which has removed this font from the font book (according to several forums). If someone has an idea for putting back this specific font...
Thanks again
