Gradient doesn't move with Pics

Postby bvkasyap » Sun Oct 11, 2009 3:33 pm

Hello,
I have recently started using Inkscape. It's a wonderful software to create realisitic effects. I have created some pictures in different Inkscape files. Now I am trying to import all of them into one Single file. The pics get imported but not the gradients. I loose all the gradients I have given for a picture. Also, when I move a picture in the same file, the gradient doesn't move. How to fix this problem? Please help me as this is really important for me to move forward.

Thanks.
Kasyap.

Looks like this bug https://bugs.launchpad.net/inkscape/+bug/165936

As you can see it's been fixed since 0.46, you can download one of the development versions or wait for 0.47 to come out (soon) to solve the problem. If you don't want that you can maybe edit the gradient IDs in XML editor (under Edit menu) so they don't clash between documents (if that is indeed your problem), but don't try that if you don't know what you're doing.

Inspect the documents and see if there are different gradients with the same ID in both documents. Maybe someone of the forum can help you edit them.

To move the gradient along with the object you have to enable that option on the Selector toolbar, I believe it's the third button in a group of 4 on the far right.

Hi PrKos,
Thank you very much for quick response. I haven't played neither with XML editor nor with editing gradient codes. But Selecting the third icon in the 'Affect' on the selection toolbar to fix the gradient did help not only in moving the object with gradient in the same doc but also in importing other pics from other docs into one doc without losing the gradient. I really appreciate your help.

My next request is ... is there a way of reducing the file size of the finished docs in inkscape format? So that when you club two or more files, it won't become a huge file and slow down your work?

Thanks again and I appreciate your help.

How big is your file (in MB and how many objects does it contains)?

I've worked with a lot of objects before and haven't noticed any problems, only when you go over thousands of them can you see a slowdown.

But there are other things that can make it slow - filters (blurs and other filters). In dev version there is a new mode for viewing your drawing "No filters" just to speed things up with filters filled documents. Until then you can keep your filtered objects in a separate layer and turn it off while working on other parts of your drawing, or use Outline mode.

You can Vacuum defs to remove unused definitions but I doubt it will give you speed boost. You can also use Clones where appropriate and share gradients between objects (there's a preference to turn it on), this will reduce your file size but probably won't affect responsiveness.

Thanks man,
I didn't understand what you were saying as I am not familiar with all of those terms or icons yet. But I'll try to figure them out and get back to you if I have any questions. Thanks a lot for you help. I am pretty sure I'll still have a lot of questions as I work more and more on it.
