Gradient swatches
Gradient swatches
I have collected about 780 ggr gradients from various sources. Since in inkscape there is no other way to have a look at them than by opening them one by one I have made a python program that generates a postscript file (with a "trick" for the alpha channel),. See http://rosros-3.blogspot.com/. If anybody is interested, please let me know where I can upload the files (as pdf).
I have contacted the openclipart library moderators but got no reply, "deviant art" has banned my domain...

Re: Gradient swatches
You could upload it on MediaFire.
What do you mean that DeviantArt has banned your domain?

Re: OCAL
I sent 2 messages: one through the web interface "http://openclipart.org/media/contact", the other to the list "clipart@lists.freedesktop.org".
Re: DeviantArt
I have two e-mail addresses, for both the reply to subscription is alwaws:
"Banned

Maybe YOU can subscribe me...

Thanks for the link. Subscribed.

Re: Gradient swatches
So, are you really banned from DA?
If not, you should be able to contact support to correct the issue.

Re: Gradient swatches
I saw his answer to you so I chose not to answer. Do you feel his answer is in error?

Re: Gradient swatches
The easiest way to distribute these gradients for Inkscape users would be to put them into an SVG file (as you have with the PDF). Myself, I'm not sure how to use ggr files in Inkscape.
Re: Gradient swatches
These collections of gradients should be distributed as bundles (see "readme" files in each collection).
Gimp gradients (ggr) are easily imported [File->Import->Gimp Gradient (*.ggr)] in Inkscape,
select then an object, press Shift-Ctrl-F and assign the gradient.
There is no need to convert them to SVG format.
I have prepared the pdf previews since there is no preview of the gradients in Inkscape, one is therefore
forced to load the gradients one by one just to choose one of them, for instance among hundreds of different ones,
which might be unpractical,

I didn't know that, thanks.

Re: Gradient swatches
you can also drag and drop them onto the canvas from a file manager window. (works on win anyways)

This part I understand, but what if you have a document that has a gradient that you want to keep how do you export or keep the gradient only for reuse?
Because now when I want to reuse a gradient from a particular document I have to open the document and then write the colors for the gradient and then go to the new document and add the colors which can be pain.

Re: Gradient swatches
if you make sure that both documents are the same inkscape session (open one however youwant, open the second using file>open form the first inkscape window)
then you should be able to c/p the shape with the gradient from one doc to the other, although it can hit snags if theres naming conflicts which is a known bug.
once its copied, paste style onto the new shape, delete the old one.

OK I see that you are misunderstanding me.
1. I come across a svg docuement with a nice gradient in it. I would like to save the gradient to use in other documents or photos (ie. Gimp or Inkscape)
2. How do I save just the gradient so that I can reuse at anytime without having to remake the gradient each time I want to reuse it?

Re: Gradient swatches
for now the only hting you can do is have a doc you se as nothing but a library for intersesting gradients. Copy and paste it to there, and save, when you want it again, c/p it to where you want it.
Gradients Central on Sourceforge
I have created a sourceforge project for collecting open-source gradients.
http://sourceforge.net/projects/gradcentral/
It is empty now, but I am going to move the gradients above and a few new ones into it, plus
updated preview pdfs (with the standard checkerbox representation of transparency, I had to code
this in Python since there is no easy Postscript command to do this).
Users will be invited to contribute their (open-source or public-domain) gradients.
Comments and suggestions are welcome!

Re: Gradient swatches
Actually, I think there are plans by the Inkscape development team for a similar system as OCAL where users can share swatches and gradients.
Re: Gradient swatches
In the meantime I have uploaded the gradients above to
https://sourceforge.net/projects/gradcentral/
(Download section).
including improved pdf preview files.
All the files above have been removed.

Well, yes, but this is not locked to Inkscape. We rather want same storage for GIMP, Inkscape, Scribus, Krita and friends. But for this we need a new swatches file format to handle CMYK, process colors etc.
